Ben Rodrigues turns his real-life love story into new single “A Girl Like You”
South African pop artist Ben Rodrigues is turning one of the most memorable moments of his love story into a feel-good pop anthem. Out today, A Girl Like You is a playful, nostalgic new single inspired by the very first moment Ben laid eyes on his now-fiancée, Talisha.
The story behind the song begins on the night of Ben’s very first live show. He had invited Talisha to come along, and moments before stepping onto the stage, Ben peeked his head out from behind the curtain. She was the first face he saw.
That real-life moment makes its way directly into the opening verse of A Girl Like You, as Ben recalls seeing her for the first time and immediately being struck by her.
From there, the song takes a playful approach to an unlikely love story — and a question Ben has heard countless times in one form or another: “How did a guy like that get a girl like you?”
Rather than taking the question too seriously, Ben turned it into the song’s central hook.
“I’ve been asked some version of that question so many times,” says Ben. “So instead of getting offended, I thought, why not make a song about it? The whole idea is basically me admitting that I’m just as confused as everyone else about how I managed to get a girl like Talisha.”
Lyrically, Ben pokes fun at himself throughout the track, questioning how someone who seems “way too good” for him could end up being his girl. Eventually, the joke turns outward, speaking directly to every guy who has ever looked at his relationship and thought: how did I pull this off?
Sonically, A Girl Like You taps into the fun, melodic pop of the early 2000s, with the kind of big, instantly memorable chorus that defined an era of feel-good pop. Drawing inspiration from artists including One Direction, Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes, the track combines Ben’s nostalgic pop sensibilities with the playful energy that has become part of his own sound.
The result is deliberately uncomplicated: a feel-good love song about being completely smitten, slightly self-deprecating and self-aware enough to admit that sometimes, you simply can’t believe your luck.
At its heart, A Girl Like You is a celebration of finding someone who feels completely out of your league and being lucky enough to call them yours.
