Confessions of a Blacklisted Woman: She Bellows Returns In An Interactive Theatre Experience

Theatre-maker Zimkitha Kumbaca brings her provocative and socially urgent production, Confessions of a Blacklisted Woman: She Bellows, to East London for a special one-night-only interactive showcase on 22 August 2026 at 18:00. The performance will take place at Legends Showcase Exclusive Venue, 42 Stewart Drive, Berea, offering audiences an immersive theatrical encounter that moves beyond passive viewing into dialogue and reflection.

Supported by the National Arts Council (NAC), this reimagined presentation transforms the acclaimed play into an interactive theatre experience, where audiences are invited to engage directly with the themes, performers, and narratives. This format breaks the traditional “fourth wall,” creating space for real-time conversation around urgent societal issues affecting women in South Africa today.

Originally written by Zimkitha Kumbaca, Confessions of a Blacklisted Woman: She Bellows is a sharp, satirical and deeply unsettling exploration of Black womanhood, patriarchy, and systemic gender-based violence. Set in a haunting Doll Factory Expo, the play follows five life-sized dolls on a quest to become “real” African women, raising pressing questions: What does it take to become an African woman? And at what cost?

Kumbaca’s use of the Doll Master as a controlling force represents the pervasive and often subconscious voice of patriarchy, while the dolls themselves embody women navigating cycles of societal policing, submission, censorship, and identity erasure. Through dark humour, surrealism, and exaggerated scenarios, the production exposes how women are shaped and often silenced by family structures, cultural expectations, and societal norms. Humour softens the entry into difficult conversations, but as the narrative unfolds, audiences are confronted with increasingly raw and uncomfortable truths.

Kumbaca says:

“I wrote this play for women who didn’t have the language to describe what they were experiencing whether it was grooming, silencing, or shame. Today, those realities are even more visible, yet we are still not doing enough as a society. This story is important because it forces us to confront the systems that normalise violence against women and challenges us to take accountability, individually and collectively.”

This special showcase will be brought to life by students from the Sonwa Sakuba Institute for the Performing Arts, offering emerging Eastern Cape talent the opportunity to engage with a significant South African theatre text while introducing audiences to to fresh voices and perspectives.

The relevance of the piece has only intensified over time. Originally written before widespread discourse on gender-based violence and consent culture, the play now returns in response to ongoing crises across South Africa and the continent.

The striking visual identity of the production is reflected in its poster, featuring a young Black girl no older than six; dressed in a blonde wig, red dress, and oversized heels. The image powerfully symbolises the forced maturation and commodification of young girls, with a barcode marking hinting at a system that grooms and objectifies from an early age.

“Women are still being reduced, objectified, and silenced, often in very public ways. This work is an invitation for honest self-reflection and dialogue.” Kumbaca adds. “I want audiences to ask themselves how far we’ve really come. Feminism is not a foreign concept, it is necessary.

Since its debut, Confessions of a Blacklisted Woman: She Bellows has been staged at major venues including the South African State Theatre, Soweto Theatre, POPArt Theatre, Windybrow Theatre, Joburg Theatre, and the Playhouse Company, as well as being featured in the curated programme of the National Arts Festival. It continues to resonate for its fearless storytelling and unflinching social commentary.

This East London showcase offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience the work in a participatory format, where theatre becomes not just performance, but a platform for collective engagement, healing, and critical dialogue.

Bring your voice, and step into a space where theatre challenges, provokes, and connects. Confessions of a Blacklisted Woman: She Bellows is more than a performance, it is a call to reflect, to engage, and to act.
