More Than 50 Young Magicians Take the Stage in Makin’ Magic at Artscape
Cape Town’s The College of Magic students and graduates, with the support of the City of Cape Town, will take to the stage at Artscape Theatre on 6 and 7 June in the family magic spectacular, Makin’ Magic. The dazzling production runs for four performances only.
Combining illusion, comedy and storytelling, the action unfolds in the eccentric laboratory of the brilliant but slightly chaotic Professor, played by Cape Town actor Matthew Baldwin. When a mysterious monster appears, the Professor’s experiments spiral hilariously out of control and the stage erupts into magical mishaps, inventive illusions and unexpected challenges. With help from the audience, the performers find imaginative ways to save the day.
Performed by a sensational cast of talented young magicians, the show celebrates creativity as recycled objects, everyday items and plenty of imagination transform junk into theatrical wonder. Makin’ Magic plays like a fast-moving variety mixtape built for families: bold visual magic, big character comedy and high-skill performance. Expect moments that range from close-up astonishment on live video to large-scale stage illusions, with audience participation designed to make young theatregoers feel part of the show.
Creative Director Chad Findlay, says:
“Makin’ Magic is about showing young people that extraordinary things can come from the simplest ideas, and that with creativity and imagination you can do remarkable things. We wanted to create a show that feels like stepping inside a magician’s imagination. It’s playful, unpredictable, full of heart and filled with moments that make audiences gasp and laugh at the same time.”
Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, says:
“The City of Cape Town is proud to continue its partnership with the College of Magic for Makin’ Magic, an extravaganza that encourages young people to use their imagination to entertain and develop themselves while inspiring others. The City’s support for Makin’ Magic is aimed at providing the youth with hope and contributing towards unlocking the potential in all emerging performers.”
With its mix of theatrical storytelling, comedy and world-class magic, Makin’ Magic promises an entertaining experience for audiences of all ages.

The College of Magic
Also known internationally as South Africa’s ‘Hogwarts’, The College of Magic is a non – profit community youth development organisation that uses the art of magic to inspire, educate and offer hope to young people in Cape Town, South Africa. Established in 1980, The College of Magic provides a haven for children to be themselves and learn to be stars, regardless of where they come from.
The College of Magic is first and foremost a unique place of contemporary education for young people. It believes that every child is different; that every child is creative and has an innate sense of curiosity and wonder. The College has shaped its curriculum around this ethos, and the staff are dedicated to helping each learner find and develop their unique passions and talents.
The College’s exceptional students have been showcased all over the world – from performance in the USA, Austria, China and Italy to a recent 60 Minutes feature on primetime TV in the United States, and in other media including The New York Times, Globe and Mail, CNN and BBC.
The College of Magic accepts children from 10 years of age upwards for a variety of courses. Most courses run over a 15 or 30-week period during the school year. Shorter courses for beginners and adults are also offered.
Its graduates have become successful in a wide range of professions. In the field of entertainment, many have excelled as professional magicians, stand-up comedians, theatre professionals and variety artists. In the world of film, graduates can be found on both sides of the camera – acting, directing, or as part of the crew. Many have become successful in business, engineering, medicine, education and other fields.
