Comedy legend Mark Banks brings an evening of off-the-wall hilarity to The Whirlwind Theatre
One of South Africa’s most celebrated comedians is coming to one of Johannesburg’s newest live entertainment destinations when comedy legend Mark Banks takes to the stage at The Whirlwind Theatre at the Delta Environmental Centre on Friday, 3 July.
A household name for more than three decades, Banks remains one of South Africa’s most respected and enduring comedians. His unique blend of razor-sharp observation, satire, storytelling and improvisation has earned him a loyal following and cemented his place as one of the country’s true comedy icons.
Fresh from touring extensively around South Africa, Banks brings his latest comedy buffet to Johannesburg after recently leaving a Delta Park audience in stitches during a showcase performance.
His latest offering is classic Mark Banks — delightfully unpredictable and gloriously unfiltered.
Audiences can expect his unique take on everything from the soaring cost of living (and dying), medical aids, neighbourhood security, airlines, estate agents and politicians to endangered species, suburban survival and even money laundering for amateurs. No topic is safe and no sacred cow survives.
One of the highlights of every performance is what Banks affectionately calls his “audience exploratory“, an improvised interaction with audience members that often delivers some of the evening’s biggest laughs, together with his famously dubious prizes, including a legendary Russell Hobbs Halaal tumble dryer.
A founder member of Friends of the Flamingo and the proud recipient of three lifetime awards for what he jokingly describes as “reckless comedy driving,” Banks continues to prove why he remains one of South Africa’s most original comedic voices.
The performance forms part of Comedy Nights at The Whirlwind Theatre, an initiative that is quickly establishing the venue as one of Johannesburg’s most exciting boutique destinations for live entertainment.
The theatre’s commitment to showcasing South Africa’s finest comedy continues later this month with Comedy in the Park on 18 July, bringing together Chris Forrest, King Nqoba, Shanray van Wyk and Martin Jonas for a special Mandela Day fundraising performance in support of the Delta Park upgrade fund.
Nestled within the Delta Environmental Centre, The Whirlwind Theatre was founded by entertainment entrepreneurs Tabitha Hoy and Bridget van Oerle, together with acclaimed comedian, broadcaster and television personality Chris Forrest. Their shared vision is to create an intimate performance space where audiences can experience South Africa’s finest comedy, music and theatre while supporting local artists, creating memorable experiences and building a vibrant cultural hub in the heart of Johannesburg.
Tabitha Hoy, co-founder of The Whirlwind Theatre, says:
“When we created The Whirlwind Theatre, our vision was to build a home for exceptional South African performers and unforgettable audience experiences.”
“Mark Banks has been making South Africans laugh for more than three decades and remains one of the country’s true comedy greats. Having him perform on our stage is exactly what this theatre was created for. Every show at The Whirlwind is about bringing audiences closer to remarkable performers, and we know this is going to be one of those unforgettable evenings.”
With an intimate setting, excellent acoustics and a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by the natural beauty of Delta Park, The Whirlwind Theatre continues to attract some of South Africa’s finest performers while offering audiences a unique alternative to larger commercial venues.
Guests are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the on-site cafe and bar before the performance. The Whirlwind Café opens with food and drinks at 5pm
