Op my eish!: Emotions run high as tension and honesty collide
Episode six of Op My Eish! showed that Ruan’s journey to love is not only about fun and flirtation, but also about difficult conversations, raw honesty and emotions that could no longer be hidden. After the previous night’s game, the tension between the ladies was still palpable.
The episode opened with Ruan and JP reflecting on the discomfort that arose during the yes/no game. Ruan said he could sense tension in the group and that two of the ladies in particular seemed uncomfortable.
The first activity of the day was Sip & Slide – a playful challenge where the ladies had to slide down a waterslide with a drink in hand to reach Ruan without spilling anything. There was no winner. The goal was simply to have fun. The ladies struggled, slipped and laughed, until Charlene used her own tactic and simply walked over to Ruan. He then had to take a sip and join the game himself. When it was Ruan’s turn, the ladies couldn’t take their eyes off him.
Bejanke was the next to successfully make it across by sliding on her knees, followed by Saartjie. Ruan later said:
“The Sip & Slide brought back so many memories. I remember when we were kids, we had those blue ones that lay flat on the ground. So, it brought back great memories, and I didn’t think I’d be on a Slip ’n Slide again anytime soon.”
The fun continued when the drinks were put down and everyone had to see who could slide the furthest. Just as it seemed to be over and Ruan was comfortably seated at the end of the slide, Cindy made a spontaneous and unexpected decision to slide down again straight to Ruan – a moment that surprised everyone.
Later, Ruan and the ladies spent time at the spa, where conversations ranged from what they find attractive in a man to braais and being naughty. There was some innuendo in the banter that clearly made some of the ladies uncomfortable. When Ruan suggested changing the room arrangements so that certain ladies could sort out their issues, some looked uneasy and concerned.
That evening’s challenge pushed boundaries once again. JP announced that the ladies had to dress a little more daringly and had to choose between two options: whisper something in Ruan’s ear or dare him to do something – all while Ruan was blindfolded. With numbers assigned and Ruan without any idea of who was who, some ladies kept it playful, while others were more adventurous with scarves, hugs and even a kiss. Ruan said
“It was a fun game to play, and it was a good start to the evening.”
When Ruan had to guess who did what, he immediately recognised certain women – which made the group wonder how he could be so sure. The light-hearted mood, however, quickly shifted when Ruan once again mentioned the room issue and emotions began to overflow. Charlene admitted that there were ladies who did not like her, and Hermi decided to address the tension directly. It was clear that Charlene and Hermi didn’t see eye to eye. During the conversation, Ruan said:
“You don’t have to agree, and I can hear that Charlene and Hermi have big differences. Can we leave it there? Every person here is very special.”
Later, Ruan asked Charlene for a one-on-one conversation.
“I haven’t spent time with Charlene yet, and I felt it was time to get to know her,” he said.
What started playfully soon turned serious when Ruan admitted he does not want to get married again. Charlene explained her view:
“I believe in marriage. I believe it is right. I believe the Lord designed it, and because it is His design, I think it is very beautiful.”
The conversation went even deeper when Charlene spoke about the loss of her brother, and Ruan, in turn, shared how his mother’s death in 2019 tore his family apart.
“My whole family completely split. She was the glue. So, JP and I are basically on our own now,”
he said, before also opening up about his relationship with his biological father:
“I still have a dad – I have two dads. I found out who my real father is when I was 18. I only started a relationship with him in 2025. And that’s why I think I went off the rails for a long time.”
The two also spoke about long-distance relationships and Charlene’s health struggle – she was ill for almost a year.
Although no one went home this week, the episode showed that not every turning point in Op My Eish! comes with a farewell. With tension being voiced and personal truths coming to light, Ruan’s journey took a quieter but much deeper turn.
