Die Oord – where things are never as they seem
Episode five of Die Oord has officially turned everyone into a suspect. From disturbing recurring symbols to suspicious reactions and badly hidden secrets, the clues are piling up and so are the theories. One thing is clear: somebody knows far more than they are letting on. Here are our hottest takes after last week’s intense episode.
1. Somebody, call a doctor!
Paul breaks down after seeing Jacomien with plastic over her head. That reaction felt too raw and like he has seen this nightmare before. And Jacomien pushing him to see Dr. Brink? Never random in a murder mystery.
2. The plastic killer
First Jacomien’s prank, then Miems’ dog in the laundry room. The same disturbing plastic treatment. This is not a coincidence anymore. It is clearly the killer’s signature, and it is working. The whole town is rattled.
3. Cliché? Or dirty cop?
Stoffel’s panic when Brandi finds evidence at Visblek was telling. He practically demands she hands it over, then she gets attacked minutes later? The timing is way too convenient. Is he protecting the poachers… or something worse?
4. Reformed? Or relapsed?
Vernon’s playing the friendly ice cream man, but that text he fired off right after talking to Brandi, followed immediately by her attack, smells rotten. Maybe the gangster never really left, he just got better at hiding.
5. Flashback!
Juanita’s flashbacks about Stefan feel like a major clue; it is now possible that Juanita may have seen Stefan on the night of his death or knows more than what we know. Her flashbacks and memories suggest there are still buried truths waiting to come out.
6. Mommy dearest
Martie hiding that bloody jacket to protect her son might be the worst decision she’s ever made. Tampering with evidence never ends well, especially when everyone in Kalfiebaai is already lying or hiding something.
Kalfiebaai is eating itself alive. At this point, almost everyone in town is hiding something, which makes it nearly impossible to know who can still be trusted. Die oord is getting darker, and we’re here for it.
Die Oord is directed by Eva du Preez, and the series was filmed in and around the Cape Peninsula, from Kommetjie to Melkbosstrand, as well as in the northern suburbs of Cape Town. The producers are Wolflight Films, led by Roelof Storm, who was also responsible for the SAFTA-nominated drama series Niggies.
Die Oord airs on Tuesdays at 8PM on kykNET (DStv Channel 144) and is also available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.
