10-Year-Old Isabella’s dream of meeting the Springboks becomes reality
A dream came true for Isabella Esterhuyse, a ten-year-old from East London living with cancer, as she met the Springboks on Saturday, 28th September. Thanks to Reach For A Dream, Isabella had the unforgettable experience of holding the hand of team captain, Siya Kolisi while singing the national anthem before the game against Argentina in Nelspruit.
Reach For A Dream’s has been fulfilling the dreams of children aged 3-18 with life-threatening illnesses for the past 36 years, bringing hope, joy, and unforgettable experiences to these young warriors during their most challenging times. The organisation makes an average of six dreams come true every day of the year, each one inspiring resilience and happiness.
Earlier this year, Isabella was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma. She was referred to Reach For A Dream by Dr Rema Matthew. Isabella eagerly shared her top three dreams: to meet the Springboks, go on a safari, or receive an iPad. Meeting the Springboks was at the top of her list.
After receiving medical clearance to travel, Reach For A Dream worked closely with SA Rugby and sponsors, including Capital Hotel & Apartments and Shamrock Pies, to make Isabella’s dream come true. On the day of the game, Isabella’s excitement was contagious, and the Springboks’ victory in securing the 2024 Rugby Championship added to her immense joy.
Chloe Katompa, Head of Operations at Reach For A Dream, said:
“As an organisation, we always go above and beyond to ensure that we fulfil each child’s dream. We are delighted to have made Isabella’s dream a reality, and even more so that the entire nation could share in this beautiful moment with us.”
Isabella said:
“I had the time of my life. My favourite part was holding Siya Kolisi’s hand on the field and when Gayton McKenzie [Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture of South Africa] let me hand over the trophy.”
Her mother, Tara, shared:
“This day has meant everything to Isabella. We are overwhelmed by the love and support shown to our daughter.”
Isabella continues to show remarkable strength throughout her medical journey and remains determined to return to the rugby field to play club rugby again.
“I have always loved rugby,” she said. “I miss it, and I cannot wait to get back on the field.”
Looking ahead, Isabella hopes to become a paediatric oncologist to help other children battling cancer, just as Dr Matthew has helped her.
This dream-fulfilment experience is just one of the many examples of how Reach For A Dream brings light into the lives of children facing serious illnesses.
