Opera UCT Third Season Launch – a Spectacular Showcase of Talent
Hit the high note and the high life and head to the Baxter Concert Hall, Thursday, 25 February 2025!

Opera UCT announces the launch concert for its third season as a production house, which promises to be an unforgettable evening of music. Happening at the Baxter Concert Hall on Tuesday, 25 February 2025, the performance will highlight the exceptional skills of the school’s rising stars and offers a taste of the exciting productions to come in 2025.

This year’s launch is a feel-good opening to the season, offering a diverse selection of duets, trios, quartets, and choruses from beloved operas such as La Bohème, Rigoletto, and Porgy and Bess. Between the musical numbers, Professor Jeremy Silver, director of Opera UCT, will provide insights and anecdotes, guiding the audience through the repertoire and sharing stories about the performers and their journeys.

Professor Jeremy Silver says:

“We are incredibly proud of what our young artists have achieved. Opera UCT continues to produce world-class talent, with many of our singers going on to perform on prestigious international stages. This launch is a chance to celebrate their accomplishments, welcome our new students and share our passion for opera with the Cape Town community.”

The concert will feature several of Opera UCT’s rising stars, many of whom are already making waves on the global stage. Audiences may well remember tenor Luvo Maranti, an Operalia finalist who is now enjoying a residency at the National Opera Studio in London for example. Because this is also the month of love, we would like to express our congratulations to Luvo not only for this career achievement, but for his recent engagement to fellow Opera UCT graduate and National Opera Studio artist, Moloko Letsoalo.

Other key announcements will be made during the evening, which underpin the international standing of Opera UCT, already recognised for its high standard and consistent output of world-class talent.

“Come and see these rising stars before they leave our shores—you won’t want to miss it,” Silver encourages.

Following a stellar 2024 which included the world premiere of Dalinda, the 2025 season promises to be another exciting journey, with several highlights, such as:

  • A major production of “Die Fledermaus” later in the year – a fun-filled operetta
  • Opera UCT’s contribution to SHORTS: a Festival of short operas, in March
  • Concerts at the 2nd winter arts festival, HEAT, and more.

In addition to these performances, Opera UCT will host its annual competitions, masterclasses, and special concerts throughout the year, all in all marking yet another busy and productive period for South Africa’s foremost opera training establishment.

The performance will be followed by a meet-the-cast reception, where guests can also enjoy a glass of wine and connect with the performers.
