Donovan Yaards gets the party started in Megastars of Pop at Rockwood Theatre

Donovan Yaards is beyond flamboyant and strikes an everlasting impression when he takes to the stage wearing his black thigh-high, shiny stiletto boots in the Megastars of Pop production currently running at the Rockwood Theatre at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom.

The 31 year-old Donovan not only hosts this music extravaganza but is also one of the performers. Megastars of Pop features a vibrant mix of music by some of the world’s most celebrated pop singers including Elton John, Pink, Elvis, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, the perfect production match for an artist of his caliber.

“I have been singing since I can remember and started singing professionally at age 13,” Donovan tells. “Being on stage as a performer dares me to take on the responsibility of being honest and fearless. The stage is a very sacred place for me. It truly transforms you, the space and the people around it and that is what I love about show business.”

Hailing from Kimberley where he was born and raised and attended both the Transvaal Road Primary and Saint Patrick’s Christian Brothers College schools, Donovan says that he never consciously chose to make singing and performing a career.  “I just simply never saw myself earning a living in any other way.”

In Grade 8, this sensational performer in the making decided that he would study Musical Theatre at Tshwane University of Technology after school and that is exactly what happened.  “It is there that I got to refine my talents and turn them into something professional and marketable.”

Completely at ease and accustomed to life on stage, Donovan performed in Turkey at Magic Life Resorts, entertaining international guests in shows with similar aspects to Megastars of Pop. He also proudly speaks of a tribute show called #Respect in which he performed in 2017 at the Theatre on the Square in Sandton. This show was directed and choreographed by Owen Lonzar and featured a “female-only repertoire” performed by men.

“It was an answer to the negative #menaretrash comments at the time and we wanted to bring a positive spin to it all by paying respect to the female artists and all they have brought to the music industry and the legends they are, but packaged in fun and light hearted entertainment.”

Donovan is guaranteed to get the party started and have you up on your feet, clapping, foot-tapping or dancing along in this exquisite production for all. Megastars of Pop runs at Rockwood Theatre Sibaya, Durban’s premier live entertainment venue until 4 August.
