Theatre on the Square presents A Powerful Revival of Athol Fugard’s Masterpiece: Master Harold… and the Boys
In honour of the recent passing of South Africa’s most celebrated playwright, Athol Fugard, a poignant new production of his acclaimed play Master Harold… and the Boys will take the stage, directed by the esteemed Warona Seane.
Starring legendary actor Sello Maake KaNcube, alongside Lebohang Motaung and Daniel Anderson, this powerful revival is a must-see tribute to Fugard’s enduring legacy.
Set in 1950s apartheid South Africa, Master Harold… and the Boys is a deeply personal, semi-autobiographical story that explores how racism and bigotry seep into the hearts of those who live under its shadow. At once heartbreaking and illuminating, the play follows a white teenager, Hally, and his complex relationship with two Black men who work in his mother’s tea shop. The themes of friendship, betrayal, and systemic injustice still resonate with undeniable force today.
Renowned lighting and set designer Wilhelm Disbergen brings the world of the play to life with a vivid, immersive design that anchors the emotional weight of the narrative.
As we commemorate Fugard’s immense contribution to theatre, this production offers audiences both a tribute and a timely reminder of the enduring relevance of his work.
Sello Maake KaNcube says:
“We are honoured to be the first to celebrate the life and legacy of the great South African playwright, Athol Fugard, following his untimely passing on 11 June 2025. With Master Harold and the Boys, we remember a writer who laid bare the intimate, often painful truths of apartheid through characters rich with humanity and complexity. His work offered actors sumptuous roles and audiences unforgettable truths. May his soul rest in peace, and may his words live on in our hearts.”
