Farming reality show for city slickers to return to DStv
DStv’s hit reality series Plaasjapie, where novice farmers must try to tackle farming activities with their bare hands for the first time in their lives, are to return to kykNET next year. The show is now looking for contestants and the winner could walk away with up to R1 million.
South African TV personality, radio presenter and Men’s Health model, Ewan Strydom, will again host the show.
With Plaasjapie kykNET isn’t looking for established farmers to come to the farm, but rather for wannabe farmers stuck in a town or a city yearning to experience life on the farm.
It will be like the first season of Plaasjapie where 16 competitors are being challenged to show their true grit and farming skills.
Can you make a solid plan, regardless of the conditions? How about staying in a very basic shed with 16 strangers?
Be assured, there will be underhandedness and at times maybe even a little bit of cheating. Plans will be made to form alliances whilst others may be trying to throw you under the bus – all for the sake of surviving.
Throughout you must remain alert to undercurrents in your group while at the same time focusing on the tasks at hand. It’s going to be tough on all fronts and at times you may doubt your decision entering for Plaasjapie. But that is what being a farmer is all about – to endure, to continue and to always come up with a doable plan.
Dian Louw, an artist from Pretoria, won the first series. He became a veteran in erecting fences and herding sheep, something extremely remote from his comfort zone.
“I also worked damn hard and did everything possible to deserve my spot on the farm without anyone being able to say I didn’t bring my side,” he said last year after being announced the winner.
Dian about Plaasjapie 2
Dian is enthusiastically encouraging people to enter the series and describes the experience as something that will change your heart.
“It is the adventure of a lifetime. Not only do you get to learn so much about yourself, but you also learn about other people, the farm and how farmers cope. Some nights laying in my bed I still can’t believe I did it. It truly feels like a dream.
“Enter, test yourself. It is easy to sit on your sofa thinking it is something you can do easily . . . until you are there and must deal with missing home and dealing with interesting personalities.
“You learn to be quiet – and during those quiet times, you continue to grow. It doesn’t matter if you are leaving on the first or the last day, you would have learnt so much about yourself, other people and life. Not to mention your connection with nature . . .
“Nowadays it is so easy for me to switch my phone off. I can do it because I spent 21 days without it. It’s just great to know all is back to basics. What an incredible adventure. Get off your sofa and stand up for yourself.”
Presenter Ewan Strydom says Dian’s success during Plaasjapie 1 can partly be contributed to the systematic and calm way in which he tackled everything coming his way.
