Acclaimed Stage Production Man With No Surname Comes to Joburg Theatre

A powerful new theatre production, Man With No Surname, will take centre stage at Joburg Theatre, bringing a gripping story about identity, morality, and memory to audiences in Johannesburg.

Written by renowned South African storyteller Mfundi Vundla and directed by award-winning theatre director James Ngcobo, the production explores the personal and political journeys of men shaped by South Africa’s turbulent past.

At the heart of the story is Thabo, whose life intersects with that of Moruti — a doctor and former freedom fighter — and a writer returning home from exile in the United States. Through their encounters, Man With No Surname explores themes of belonging, masculinity, forgiveness, and the lasting emotional impact of history on personal lives.

The production features a strong cast of South African talent led by acclaimed actor Bonko Khoza, who recently won a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for his role in the hit television series The Wife. Known for his emotional range and powerful performances on screen, Khoza’s return to the theatre stage is a highlight of the production.

Joining him is rising actor Pakamisa Zwedala, who has built a strong reputation through his work in theatre. Zwedala has appeared in a number of stage productions and brings a dynamic presence and depth to the ensemble, further strengthening the production’s connection to South Africa’s vibrant theatre tradition.

Director James Khoza says:

“This story speaks to the human need for identity and healing. Man With No Surname challenges us to look at the choices we make and how our past shapes who we become.”

Director James Ngcobo believes the production offers an important reflection on South Africa’s journey.

“This play is about confronting memory and understanding the emotional cost of history. It asks difficult questions about responsibility, love, and the search for redemption,” says Ngcobo.

With rich storytelling, layered characters, and atmospheric use of music — blending jazz, classical elements, and spiritual undertones — the production promises an immersive theatrical experience.

Man With No Surname is recommended for audiences aged 16 and older due to strong language and mature themes.

Audiences can expect a compelling and emotionally resonant production that speaks directly to contemporary South African society while reflecting on the country’s past.
