Jazzing it up with McCoy Mrubata

This year marks the second edition of the Market Theatre’s Jazzy July programme that was launched in 2018. Jazzy July dabbles across different genres and takes audiences down memory lane with some of South Africa’s popular sounds throughout the evening.

This year jazz lovers can look forward to award-winning jazzist, McCoy Mrubata, who will celebrate his 60th birthday and mark 30 years as recording artist in a spectacular concert at the Market Theatre.  Collaboration with McCoy Mrubata for this year’s music feat will resonate with young jazz enthusiasts of all ages.

McCoy was born in Cape Town where he grew up with the sounds of African music and played the flute. He studied informally under Langa township greats like Madoda Gxabeka, Winston Ngozi, the Ngcukana’s – Ezra & Duke, Blackie Tempi and Robert Sithole. By the 1980’s he was playing cover bands like Fever, Touch, Airbone and Vukani. In 1987 he was spotted by bandleaders Sipho Hotstix Mabuse who helped him make Johannesburg his music home. He has produced successful albums one after another in these 30 years.

This spectacular one night only performance will be a re-union repertoire of fifteen musicians that McCoy has worked with during his illustrious career. McCoy will feature some of his favourite musicians, the likes of  Prince Lengoasa, Mandisa Dlanga, Paul Hanmer, Jabu Magubane, Lex Futshane and young musicians like Titi Luzipho, Luyanda Madope and Elizabeth Gaylord.

McCoy will perform some of his popular songs and his latest offering album Brasskap Sessions Volume 3 released March 2019.

“Audiences can expect a vibrant yet elegant show as some of the known songs will be rearranged with the strings and fresh horn arrangements” said McCoy Mrubata

McCoy Mrubata chose the Market Theatre as the home for his celebration because of the theatre’s rich history and because the Market Theatre is the first theatre where he performed upon arrival in the Johannesburg from Cape Town.

The Almost Complete McCoy Mrubata which will be a big musical celebration of his 60th birthday promises to be filled with extra ordinary jazzy rhythms and sounds that will pleasure the eyes of music lovers – buy your tickets now! For the concert on 20th of July 2019
