Confined to a wheelchair after a horrific car accident, Petra Burger once felt that her physical and emotional burden was too heavy – but she has come to see what happened to her as a gift. Their stories bring human urgency to a legal battle that has unfolded over decades. Assisted dying is illegal in South Africa, despite past challenges. But a fresh case seeks to test whether the ban is constitutional. Meanwhile, deeply personal stories challenge us to ask whether dignity is best protected by preserving life at all costs, or by allowing individuals the freedom to choose when enough is enough.

Land ownership and reform are touchy subjects. But not, it seems, in the remote and beautiful part of KwaZulu-Natal that’s home to the descendants of King Shaka Zulu – and to the Thula Thula Game Reserve. Fifteen years ago, Lawrence Anthony saved seven elephants from being culled and relocated them to Thula Thula, where they thrived. Years after Lawrence’s tragic death, they had outgrown the reserve. That’s when leaders of the Cebekhulu approached Lawrence’s widow, Françoise, with an extraordinary offer. We visit Thula Thula to witness how cooperation has built a future for wildlife and community alike.
