South Africa Takes Centre Stage as Zululand Hosts the Biggest Season of Naked and Afraid Yet
One of the world’s most recognisable survival franchises has chosen Zululand as the battleground for its most ambitious season to date. Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown, featuring fourteen elite survivalists from across the world, was filmed exclusively in KwaZulu‑Natal, showcasing South Africa’s raw, untamed wilderness to a global audience.
Across 40 intense days, seven teams will face three of Zululand’s most extreme ecosystems, from scorching savannahs stalked by leopards and rhinos, to humid marshlands ruled by hippos and crocodiles, and into the violent Indian Ocean teeming with Zambezi sharks. With no food, no water and no clothes, contestants must rely entirely on their primitive bushcraft skills, resilience and interpersonal dynamics as they push themselves to the edge of human endurance.
Divided into seven pairs representing their homelands, survivalists must battle both the brutal elements and one another as they navigate Zululand’s unpredictable terrain. For the first time in franchise history, the competition introduces an official scoring system. Teams earn points by completing survival tasks and excelling in head‑to‑head challenges. Winning teams unlock critical tools to secure food, water and shelter, while the bottom two teams face off in an elimination challenge to remain in the game.
With no shared resources, no trading and no sabotage allowed, each team must rely solely on its own skill, strategy and will to survive.
Featuring up‑and‑coming international survivalists alongside franchise legends and long‑standing rivals, only one team will emerge victorious. With $200,000 and national pride on the line, the competing teams include:
- Australia: Ky Furneaux & Alexa Towersey
- Brazil: Rene Murad & Marina Fukushima
- Mexico: Pablo Melin & Fernanda Perez
- Texas: Jeff Zausch & Kerra Bennett
- USA East: Matt Wright & Gabby Balassone
- USA South: Frank Eytcheson & Teal Bulthuis
- USA Pacific: Dan Link & Rachel Strohl
South Africa has long been a magnet for major international productions, thanks to its extraordinary natural diversity and the cinematic scale of its landscapes. Few places in the world offer such a rich variety of biomes within a single region, allowing filmmakers to move seamlessly from savannah to wetland to coastline without ever leaving the country. Zululand, in particular, stands out for its dramatic scenery and thriving wildlife, a combination that creates both a visually striking backdrop and a genuinely demanding environment for survival‑based storytelling. Its protected reserves, sweeping vistas and raw, untamed terrain have made it a favourite for adventure and wildlife productions for decades. With its favourable climate, long daylight hours and proven track record as a reliable outdoor filming destination, South Africa continues to offer an unparalleled setting for global formats seeking authenticity, scale and natural intensity. Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown builds on this legacy, placing South Africa at the heart of one of the world’s most challenging survival competitions.
Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown premieres locally on Wednesday, 10 June at 20:05 on Discovery Channel (DStv Channel 121), with new episodes airing weekly until 12 August, giving viewers a front‑row seat to the most intense and visually spectacular season the franchise has ever produced.
