Viu South Africa launches Brazilian telenovelas dubbed in Zulu

Viu, PCCW’s leading pan-regional over-the-top (OTT) video streaming service, is excited to announce the addition of three captivating Brazilian telenovelas and series to its extensive library, all expertly dubbed in the local languages to engage South African viewers.

The first title, Uthando Lukama (A Mother’s Love), will be available on the platform starting 4 March. This telenovela initially captivated audiences in Brazil, amassing 35 million viewers. It has received multiple accolades, including “Best Telenovela” at the 2021 Venice TV Awards and a nomination for Best Telenovela at the 2021 International Emmy Awards. The story follows the intertwining lives of three women as they navigate the complexities of motherhood: Lurdes, who has spent 26 years searching for her kidnapped son; Thelma, who faces terminal illness while preparing her son for a future without her; and Vitória, who unexpectedly finds herself pregnant as she begins the adoption process.

Another upcoming release is Ungalahli iThemba (Never Give Up), set to debut on Viu later this year. This telenovela follows Sol, a devoted mother balancing work, family and her personal ambitions. As she confronts long hours and societal pressures, Sol’s love for music reignites, leading to an unforeseen opportunity and a reunion with a past love that could reshape her future.

This will be the first time these Zulu-dubbed titles are accessible in South Africa, with both shows being exclusive to Viu South Africa.

Tronk Voëls (Jailers), a Brazilian telenovela dubbed in Afrikaans and English, will also launch on 4 March. Celebrated at the MIPDrama Screenings, Tronk Voëls delves into the Brazilian penitentiary system through the perspective of Adriano, a prison guard committed to maintaining order through dialogue rather than violence. As he navigates the high-stakes environment of the prison, Adriano’s dedication to peace is persistently challenged.

All three telenovelas are produced by Globo, a company renowned for its high-quality productions that have garnered international acclaim.

Elouise Kelly, Country Manager, Viu South Africa, says:

“Brazilian telenovelas reflect many of the socioeconomic and multicultural dynamics present in South Africa. We believe these themes will deeply resonate with our audience.”

These new beloved stories are part of a growing selection of both local and international content that will be added to Viu’s library in the coming months. Viu is known for its diverse programming, featuring popular South African shows such as Skeem Saam, Uzalo, Generations: The Legacy and Muvhango, alongside an exciting array of titles from Korea, Turkey, Scandinavia, the United States and beyond.
