Undertone Releases A Bold EDM
South African EDM producer Undertone returns with his latest single, Still Not Taking It, a high-energy, feel-good release that blends modern electronic production with a deep-rooted respect for one of rock’s most iconic rebellious anthems. Clocking in at 125 BPM, the track is a vibrant reimagining built for both nostalgia and the dancefloor.
Inspired by growing up with the legendary 1980s hit “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” (Twisted Sister) Undertone began conceptualising the project in 2023. The initial version featured the original vocals, but legal limitations meant the track could not be officially released. What followed was a determined pursuit to do things the right way — tracking down the rights holders, including reaching out to Dee Snider himself, before ultimately securing adaptation rights through Universal Music after months of persistence.
With the green light granted, Damian stepped in to re-record the vocal, delivering a powerful performance that retains the spirit of the original while giving the track its own identity. From there, Still Not Taking It evolved steadily, gaining momentum over an eight-week production period.
Undertone approached the production with both precision and reverence. Subtle yet deliberate nods to the original track are woven throughout — from the carefully replicated bassline embedded in the synth layers, to a snare choice designed to echo the punch of the 1984 version. The instantly recognisable melodic motif (E, D#, C#, B) is reinterpreted across multiple elements, while a short guitar solo closes out the drop as a final tribute.
The result is a polished, uplifting track that bridges generations — capturing the defiant energy of the past while reintroducing it through a contemporary EDM lens.
Undertone, real name Tim Bouwers, has steadily built a reputation within South Africa’s electronic music scene for crafting emotive, accessible dance music. His productions are characterised by a signature blend of modern electronic sounds and nostalgic influences, creating tracks that resonate across age groups and musical tastes. Previous releases have showcased his ability to balance energy with melody, always rooted in a feel-good ethos.
