That’s a Wrap! Comic Con Africa 2024 Ends on a High Note
Comic Con Africa has once again proven why it is the ultimate pop culture and gaming festival on the country. Held at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, the four-day sold-out event brought together tens of thousands of fans from all walks of life, celebrating their shared passion for comics, gaming, cosplay, anime, and all things pop culture. From electrifying activations to star-studded appearances, this year’s edition marked a new pinnacle in Comic Con Africa’s growing legacy.
Bigger, Bolder, and Brighter than Ever
Having grown exponentially over they ears, Comic Con Africa 2024 set new records with more exhibitors, interactive experiences, and globally recognised brands than ever before. The festival buzzed with energy from the moment the doors opened, with fans eagerly diving into a world filled with immersive activations, jaw-dropping cosplay, and thrilling gaming experiences. Saturday tickets sold out long before the event, and by Day 2, Sunday tickets were gone too – a testament to the massive excitement generated by this year’s show.
“This year was nothing short of extraordinary,” said one fan, echoing the sentiments of thousands who celebrated the festival’s fifth live iteration. “Comic Con Africa keeps getting bigger and better every time. It’s such a standout event in my heart.”
KFC returned as the official presenting sponsor of Comic Con Africa 2024, enhancing the fan experience with their renowned Kentucky Town pop-up, offering a feast of exclusive offerings. Fans enjoyed the highly anticipated limited-edition Comic Con Menu, featuring KFC favourites and bold new creations inspired by the event. Partnering with UberEats, KFC allowed attendees to skip the queues and have meals delivered directly while they continued to enjoy the Con.
Located in the buzzing Pop Culture Hall, Kentucky Town also featured limited-edition KFC merchandise, including an exclusive KFC x Imprint collaboration, and offered fans the chance to purchase KFC’s famous sauces. Interactive activities included the KFC Play VR Challenge, with daily prizes of R3000, and a 360-degree camera for fans to capture and share their Comic Con moments, making Kentucky Town a popular destination for food, fun, and immersive experiences.
Pop Culture Meets Unrivalled Entertainment
Comic Con Africa has become renowned for bringing fans closer to the worlds they love. This year, streaming giants Disney+ and Netflix brought activations that immersed attendees in iconic shows like Agatha All Along and Squid Game, while Nu Metro’s pop-up cinema debuted a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience for movie lovers. The Main Stage became a hub of excitement with live entertainment, including DJ Elliot, who energised the crowd throughout the weekend. International guests such as Lou Ferrigno, Joe Manganiello, and Brenton Thwaites took to the stage, sharing personal stories and engaging with thrilled fans.
Speaking with Comic Con Africa, Spotlight guest and Pirates of the Caribbean star Brenton Thwaites expressed his excitement about meeting fans in South Africa, saying,
“It’s amazing to connect with a whole different continent. Seeing the positive reactions from South African fans is really special.”
He fondly recalled filming his first lead role in The Giver in South Africa, adding that it’s one of his favourite countries
Cosplay, always a highlight, dazzled attendees with its creativity. The Comic Con Africa Championships of Cosplay crowned Blu Rohbot Studios as the overall winner, earning them the chance to represent Africa at C2E2 in Chicago. Meanwhile, the fan-favourite cosplay vote went to a remarkable portrayal of Groot, captivating the crowd and reinforcing the festival’s celebration of creativity.
An Unparalleled Gaming Experience
This year’s event featured gaming on a whole new level, from intense eSports tournaments to interactive gaming zones. Telkom’s Home of Gaming was the epicentre of competitive action, with teams vying for a share of the R300,000 prize pool. The Punishers emerged victorious in the Telkom VS Masters CS2 competition, thrilling fans with their skill and strategy.
For casual gamers and enthusiasts, The Experience Hall offered a sprawling experience hall packed with free-to-play zones and the latest game previews. Meanwhile, the Doritos Crunch Zone, The Red Bull Gaming Ground, and The Toyota Gaming Engine’s gaming setups delivered next-level entertainment for gamers of all levels.
Creative Showcases and Workshops
Artist Alley was a hive of activity, showcasing the incredible talent of both local and international artists. Fans had the chance to purchase unique artwork, custom jewellery, and even get tattoos. This creative space became a community hub where artists and fans exchanged ideas, shared inspiration, and connected over their love of the arts. Workshops from comic artist Guile Sharp and writer Les Allen offered aspiring creators valuable insights into breaking into the industry, nurturing the next generation of talent.

KidsCon returned in full force, providing a dedicated space for young fans to meet their favourite characters like Mario & Luigi and LEGO characters, while interactive play zones and the NCPD’s Marvel Superhero Training Academy empowered the next generation of heroes. The festival embraced the whole family, ensuring that no one was left out of the fun.
