A Royal Court Reimagined: The Royal Countess Zingara Arrives at Melrose Arch
The Royal Countess Zingara has drawn back the curtain will draw back on her Johannesburg season, unveiling an immersive realm unlike any she has conjured before. Opening at Melrose Arch on 20 June 2026, the celebrated dinner-cirque experience returns to the Highveld after an absence of more than a decade, transformed by an entirely new visual narrative inspired by Africa’s great kingdoms, ancient crossroads and storied traditions of hospitality.
Following a triumphant Cape Town season that ran to sold-out audiences and widespread acclaim, The Royal Countess Zingara now turns her gaze northward, inviting Johannesburg audiences into a world of spectacle, artistry and enchantment delivered by a remarkable ensemble of South African and international performers.
At the heart of this new chapter is a striking reimagining of the iconic Spiegeltent. Conceived by visionary designer Richard Griffin, the familiar mirrored pavilion now rises within a vast ochre-hued royal enclosure, evoking the grandeur of legendary courts that flourished across the African continent. Rather than recreating a single place or period, the design assembles influences gathered from the Countess’s imagined travels; a rich tapestry of Byzantine ornamentation, North African craftsmanship and architectural motifs woven into a singular and wholly original setting that feels like a ceremonial realm suspended somewhere between memory, myth and dream.
Griffin says:
“The Countess’s journey carried her across Morocco, through the Sahara, to Malta and Mali. What remained with her was not simply the beauty of these places, but the generosity of spirit she encountered there. Across royal courts, desert settlements and bustling crossroads, she discovered traditions of welcome, refinement and grace that now find expression in this new world.”
The production, La Dolce Royal, is directed by Craig Leo and Valentina Leo and brought to life by a creative team that has crafted a universe where opulence and imagination converge beneath the mirrored canopy of the Spiegeltent. At a moment when the world often feels fragmented and uncertain, La Dolce Royal offers something increasingly rare: a shared experience that celebrates connection, joy and the enduring power of beauty.
Guided by a mysterious Timekeeper and greeted by the Weeping Woman, whose sorrow slowly transforms into jubilation, guests embark on a journey through breathtaking feats, stirring music, theatrical pageantry and delicious cuisine.
Among the artists appearing at Melrose Arch are former Cirque du Soleil aerial cradle specialists Juan Pablo Palacios and Victoria Perez Iacono of Argentina; Las Vegas-based Rola Bola virtuoso Axel Perez; Johannesburg acrobat Samantha Kotze; and acclaimed vocalists Megan Spencer and The Clorettes from Cape Town, alongside a host of exceptional performers from South Africa and around the globe.
