Level up your long weekend with Mario’s biggest adventure yet
As the Easter long weekend and school holidays kick off, families looking for a fresh, high-energy outing can head to cinemas nationwide for one of the most anticipated animated releases of the year. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has officially opened, bringing a colourful, fast-paced adventure to the big screen at just the right moment for the best holiday cinema experience.
Having specially landed in cinemas across South Africa on Wednesday, 1 April, in time for the holiday, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie blasts Mario and his crew into an all-new cosmic adventure. Based on Nintendo’s beloved franchise, the animated sequel follows Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and their allies as they journey through outer space, encountering new worlds, meeting Rosalina and teaming up with Yoshi, while facing off against Bowser and Bowser Jr. in a high-stakes galactic showdown. Expanding far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom, the film delivers vibrant interstellar settings, familiar faces and fresh surprises as the Mario universe levels up once again.
Directed by returning filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with a screenplay by Matthew Fogel and a score by Brian Tyler, the film brings together a standout voice cast including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Benny Safdie, Kevin Michael Richardson and Brie Larson. Produced by Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto, it blends action and comedy in a way that feels perfectly suited to the holiday mood.
What’s more, the adventure levels up in malls across the country, with Super Mario Galaxy Movie themed activations at Galleria, Ilanga Mall, Mall of the North, Secunda Mall, The Grove Mall and Tygervalley. Shoppers can look out for playful experiences inspired by the film, with each centre sharing details and timings on their social media platforms.
For those heading to the movies this weekend, selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas including Mall of Africa, Sandton City, The Zone @ Rosebank and V & A Waterfront will feature extra themed moments in their foyers, adding a little more Mario magic to the experience.
Whether you’re heading out with family, rounding up friends or flying solo, this is your cue to jump in, power up and take on a whole new galaxy with Mario leading the way.
