KickstArt Theatre presents Steven Stead’s Puss in Boots This June
The cast of Steven Stead’s Puss in Boots is currently deep in rehearsals and looking forward to heading to Cape Town next weekend where this lively pantomime for the whole family will be running at The Baxter from 26 June.
Following the success of last year’s Jack and the Beanstalk, the company continues to build a growing winter tradition at The Baxter with a production that invites audiences to step out of the cold and into a world of music, mischief, and shared laughter.
With Puss in Boots opening next weekend, let’s get to know the cast of lively characters that you will get to enjoy and see who brings these roles gloriously to life.
Meet the cast:
- Puss in Boots (aka Tiddles): Our swashbuckling feline hero, descended from a long line of noble Spanish cats (Rory Booth)
- Calypso Honeybunch: A good fairy, guardian of the Island of Esperanza (Belinda Henwood)
- Grimsby Withergood: An evil, shape-shifting goblin wizard (Bryan Hiles)
- Tom Marzipan: Puss in Boot’s hapless owner, and sometime surfer (Kyran Brady Taylor)
- Tristram Marzipan: Tom’s muscle-bound, bone-headed bully of a big brother (Lyle Buxton)
- Mother Merry Marzipan: Tom’s mother, the flamboyant village baker (Blessing Xaba)
- King Magnum, the Magnanimous: Gentle, pint-sized ruler of the Island of Esperanza (Mthokozisi Zulu)
- Princess Miranda: Magnum’s feisty daughter (Roshanda Lewis)
- Selina Swiftclaw: Lord Grimsby’s cat, a graceful but deadly assassin (Grace McIlroy)
- Dancers: Milli Mangate and Sarah Tyrrell
Director Steven Stead explaims:
“We are well into our rehearsals and Puss in Boots is looking and feeling fresh, funky and fabulous! Although the cast are working really hard, we are all having so much fun. The show is genuinely hilariously funny; I find myself laughing out loud a lot, which is very unusual. The choreography is vibrant and exciting, and the vocals are thrilling. We are really looking forward to moving into the Baxter Theatre, and bringing some verve and vitality to Cape Town this winter.”
Puss in Boots is produced by KickstArt Theatre, written and directed by Steven Stead, designed by Greg King, with choreography by Simone Mann and lighting design by Franky Steyn.
The family pantomime is set on a magical Caribbean island and follows a quick-witted feline hero on a playful adventure filled with colourful characters, lively songs, and plenty of audience participation. The production is designed to delight younger audiences with slapstick and spectacle while offering humour and local references that adults can enjoy just as much.
With its blend of comedy, music, and theatrical flair, Puss in Boots offers Cape Town audiences a welcoming and accessible live theatre experience during the winter holidays.
Greg King sys:
“It was seeing pantomimes as a child that made me fall in love with the theatre at a young age. And it’s an enormous pleasure to be able to spread that infectious joy, and love of live performance to new generations.”
Puss in Boots is an experience that brings people together. It is easy to enjoy, packed full of heart and made to be remembered.
