Mzansi Magic’s Powerful Historical Drama Introduces Ingwenyama Somhlolo, Indlovukati Lojiba and The Ngwane
Viewers across Southern Africa are in for an emotional and cultural triumph as Shaka iLembe, Mzansi Magic’s epic historical drama, proudly introduces the Swati royal lineage to its powerful second season. In a momentous celebration of Swati heritage, Episode 2 — airing Sunday, June 22nd at 8PM — marks the official debut of King Somhlolo, Queen Lojiba, and the Ngwane royal line.
Nomsa Philiso, CEO of General Entertainment at MultiChoice, says:
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome the Swati story into the Shaka iLembe universe. This is a powerful reminder to all Africans that our histories are deeply intertwined — and that through storytelling, we not only honour our past, but showcase the extraordinary beauty of our cultures to the world.”
This marks a major milestone for Shaka iLembe, the series that captivated the continent with Season 1, winning 12 SAFTAs and redefining African storytelling. Now, the spotlight turns to Eswatini’s rich history, told through characters brought to life by local talent — and made possible by the blessing of His Majesty King Mswati III, who met with Bomb Productions in 2024 to discuss the respectful portrayal of Swati heritage.
Executive Producer Desiree Markgraaff, says:
“We were honoured to meet His Majesty, who shared beautiful anecdotes about Swati history and Ingwenyama Somhlolo.”
Prince Sicelo, who served as cultural advisor to the production, ensured authenticity at every step.
“All Swati roles were cast in Eswatini,” he shares. “We’re proud to showcase incredible talent — Setsabile Masina Sithole as Queen Lojiba, Sikhanyiso Sithole as Princess Hletjiwe, and Ayanda Ginindza as Ingwenyama Somhlolo. We also welcome Thobejane Magagula as Prince Ngemu, and Alex Fakudze as Umnganiwemakhosi.”
The celebration of Swati culture extends beyond the screen.
“We were mesmerized by the hauntingly beautiful voice of Lanyamane (Miriam Dlamini) during our first visit,” says Markgraaff. “She later joined us on set with a full troupe of Swati dancers who filmed in the bitter cold of winter 2024, bringing colour and spirit to our scenes. In 2025, Miriam returned to record with the series’ composer Philip Miller and iconic Zulu vocalist Mbuso Khoza.”
The addition of Swati storylines builds on the legacy of Season 1, which followed Shaka’s transformation into a warrior king. In Season 2, Shaka and Queen Nandi arrive at KwaNobamba, where the young leader steps into power.
“We now explore Shaka the strategist, the empire builder,” says Philiso.
Returning stars include Lemogang Tsipa as Shaka, Thembinkosi Mthembu as Dingiswayo, and Nomzamo Mbatha as Nandi — fresh from her Best African Actress win at the 2024 Septimius Awards in Amsterdam. The stellar ensemble continues with Wiseman Mncube (Zwide), Dawn Thandeka King (Mkabayi), Khabonina Qubeka (Ntombazi), and Mondli Makhoba (Ngomane), supported by SAFTA winner Sheli Masondo for Best Costume Design.
“Season 2 dives deeper into power, loyalty, and the spiritual fabric that shaped an empire,” says Markgraaff. “The Swati storyline adds a new and powerful dimension to our African epic.”
