Eskom’s Top Job

As Eskom’s debt threatens to bring South Africa to its knees, the State-owned enterprise’s recent diabolical results didn’t go down well with ratings agencies. In a letter to announce his resignation that became effective at the end of July, the last Eskom CEO Phakamani Hadebe blamed the “unimaginable demands” of the job for harming his health. Eskom has had twelve CEOs in the top job in the last 25 years, and now the hunt is on again. With the recruitment drive underway, Carte Blanche examines the skills, personal qualities and extraordinary courage that will be required of the new incumbent to help turn Eskom around once and for all.

Carte Blanche investigates how a little-known company applied for a mining right, with what seems to be a fabricated environmental impact assessment copied from another mining project, placing the entire region’s highly sensitive ecology and water use at risk.

Carte Blanche investigates.
