Ruhan du Toit creates ‘hope, pride’ with new song

Ruhan du Toit, known for hit songs like “Monumentaal” and “Val Op Jou Knieë,” has now released inspiring music with a message of hope and pride. His latest Afrikaans contemporary song, Jy Hoort Hier, celebrates your place in your country and environment, reminding us of the positive aspects we can appreciate and contribute to a better future for ourselves and our children.

The concept and overview for the song were done by Dr Dirk Hermann, CEO of Solidariteit, with lyrics and music by Marco van Deventer and Georic Lomas.

“The story behind the song is mainly to get people excited and positive about the prospects of this wonderful country we live in. Yes, with all its faults, we still have so much to be grateful for,” says Ruhan.

Jy Hoort Hier is also part of Solidariteit’s #JyHoortHier campaign.

“With this campaign, we express how Afrikaners are still willing to tackle the challenges we often face in South Africa. We also answer the question of why we are willing to do so: Because we belong here,” Dr. Dirk said in turn.

Ruhan acknowledges that predicting how a song will perform is not easy.

“But based on the positive success we achieved with ‘Die Land’ and ‘Monumentaal,’ I believe it is again time for such a song and that people will like it,” he adds.

“It’s a song that brings soul food to the table and does so with a nice energetic tempo and interesting melodies,” he says.

The song will also be accompanied by a music video that showcases the true essence of South Africa. The video, filmed by Atlas Media, depicts elements like rugby, faith, and family.

“The lights at the end are each person raising their hand to make a difference. SO—turn YOUR light on with me,” says Ruhan.

The video was filmed in various locations and households in Pretoria, with the band portion filmed at Sorcery in the east of Pretoria.

Ruhan hopes his music brings a sense of belonging and pride. Although he can highlight many milestones in his career, he cites his first Afrikaans is Groot performance in 2016 as his first answer. He also has a single or two on the way, “maybe something light and on the social side,” reveals Ruhan.

Jy Hoort Hier is now available on all streaming services, such as Apple Music, Spotify, and Deezer. Find it here.
