Under pressure and isolated, around 40% of South African doctors say they’re burnt out. The Medical Protection Society surveyed 545 of their members of whom at least half felt it was near impossible to maintain any work-life balance under the current systemic pressures. Carte Blanche asks what doctors do to stay well mentally when the demands of the job become too much?

Race Jockeys: Behind the Glamour

Horse-racing is one of the most glamorous sports on the international calendar and thousands of people gather for championship races, dressed in designer outfits, to sip champagne and make million dollar bets on the winning horses. But behind the glitz and glamour, is a dangerous balance for both the riders and the horses – who are always one wrong move away from being critically injured and out of the game for life. Carte Blanche explores the life of race horse jockeys.

Bo-Kaap Gentrification

A close knit community that takes enormous pride in its heritage, religious and cultural life, the Bo-Kaap consists of generations of families increasingly hemmed in by encroaching high-rise development and gentrification that pushes up property prices and municipal rates. Carte Blanche examines what is at stake as the City of Cape Town embarks on a public participation process to decide on Bo-Kaap’s future.

Noni She-Bee-Stinging

Slated to defend her crown early this year, Noni Tenge at the age of 37 is considered one of the best women boxers in the world. With a record of 18 wins, one defeat and a draw from 20 outings, World Boxing Federation super welterweight world champ Tenge should be  living comfortably off her winnings. Carte Blanche confronts the Department of Sport about their inconsistent approach to supporting and building up our national treasure.
