Farming reality show for city slickers to returns to DStv

DStv’s hit reality series Plaasjapie, where novice farmers must try to tackle farming activities with their bare hands for the first time in their lives, returns to kykNET where the winner could walk away with up to R1 million.

Sixteen rather inexperienced city slickers have been exposed to most of the elements that comprise farm life during the second season of DStv’s popular kykNET reality show Plaasjapie.

But who are they really after learning to milk a cow, feed the pigs and live off the land? Will they become hardcore plaasjapies or will they once again be seduced by the city’s flickering lights?

Plaasjapie, a true blue South African reality show, kicks off on Thursday 18 April at 20:00 on kykNET. Seasoned Bravo! presenter Ewan Strydom will once again be the presenter of the series.

The newly-found plaasjapies consist of eight men and eight women, ranging in age between 20 and 55. They come from as far as Piet Retief and Windhoek.

In this series, where the winner may walk away with R1 million, participants have to master various farming activities and challenges that will put their willpower and determination to the test – without any gadgets or modern technology.

Plaasjapie S2 Contestants

1. Stanley Venter (24): Spare parts salesman, Pretoria

Someone dared me to enter.

2. Riaan Snyder (30): SHEQ officer (Safety, health and environmental management), Piet Retief

I come from a past where I continuously did not deem myself good enough. Then there are also people close to me to whom I’d like to prove there is more to me than meets the eye.

3. André Mouton (44), Road grader operator, Pacaltsdorp near George

I entered Plaasjapie to challenge myself, to get out of my comfort zone and to tackle something I have never done before. I want to show my children you can do anything if you have the necessary will and determination.

4. Ettienne De Villiers (36), Wedding and events planner (Owner and CEO of ART Weddings & Events), Pretoria East

I wanted to take myself out of my comfort zone to find out if I could function on a farm. My friends also challenged me to enter because they do know I love the city and to be neatly dressed. And yes, Plaasjapie completely removed me from my comfort zone.

5. Blue Kester (39), Community Development co-ordinator, Bellville

I went through a dark time with the loss of my grandfather and I have been diagnosed with mild depression. I needed something to challenge me and that would enable me to find myself again.

I am also a great fan of reality shows and have participated in a few. Every time it has changed my view on life. I wanted to look at life from a new angle. And the R1 million prize money is very attractive!

6. Liovian Anderson (40), Entrepreneur, Paarl

I entered Plaasjapie to make my children proud of me, to give my best during the series and to bring the R1 million home.

My biggest motivation was to prove to myself that I am capable of moving mountains if given the opportunity, especially when I allow myself the opportunity to put myself first, then as a mom, wife and entrepreneur. I need to fill my cup first – and keep it filled up – to be able to look after other people’s interests.

7. Michelle De Waal (42), Medical representative, Windhoek (Namibia)

I’ve entered Plaasjapie because it was something I could see myself doing. I just wanted to realise who I am and what I am capable of. I also entered to be an example for my children. I am very competitive and love challenges.

8. Milandie Grimbeek (32): Hair stylist, Beaufort West

It has been my dream forever to enter a reality show where I can take part in a game and be challenged.

Plaasjapie ticked all the boxes. I also knew it was going to challenge me as a person and I will grow from it. I wanted to prove to myself I was capable of way more than my mind allowed me.

9. Zanie Van Rensburg (53), former gym owner, nowadays selling sports equipment, Pretoria

I love all kinds of challenges, particularly those I don’t exactly know what to expect. And I love competitions. Physical challenges are my favourite ones. I also love nature, animals and being outside in the sun. Plaasjapie is one of those unique programs where your physical, strategic and emotional abilities are put to the test. And the best part of Plaasjapie is that it is in Afrikaans.

10. Anelda Price (24), Final year student: Social work, Parow Valley

Honestly, I entered because of the prize money. Who can say no to a million? I saw the advertisement for Plaasjapie on kykNET&kie and did some research on it because I didn’t know what it entailed.  When I saw it was a reality show about farm life I thought a real city slicker like me would love exposure to live on a farm. I enjoy doing things out of my comfort zone and I believed this was going to be quite an experience. One evening I was thinking by myself: “Anelda, you have nothing to lose. Just do it and see how far you get.”

11. Jannie Holsthyzen (20), Security guard, Wonderboom South

I entered Plaasjapie to prove my dad and myself right, that I can do anything if I tackle it with total dedication. And of course, the R1 million would be a welcome push for my plans for the future.

12. Pieter Gouws (28), Mechanical engineer, Cape Town

I entered because working on a farm is something I have done since childhood. I can do it easily for a living because my family is farmers. But it is not something I really would like to do. I am often asked why not. Simple, I’m not interested in farming. People must think I am a very bad farmer.

For me, Plaasjapie was a way to prove that I am good with farm management and work. Just because you are good at something doesn’t mean you have to do it for a living.

13. Liezle Wiese (56), Sales representative and marketer in the construction industry, Germiston.

I didn’t enter only to try and win R1 million. I truly wanted to see how far I could push myself in terms of hard work, my love for the soil and my love for animals. My entire life consists of hard work and my positive attitude is visible in everything I do. I am also adventurous. Even though I am not a spring chicken, I wanted to prove to myself that I can work hard on a farm.

14. Donovan Massyn (34), Senior commercial accounts manager, Pretoria East

I wanted to put myself to the test under uncomfortable and unknown conditions and situations. My mom was in a massively big motorbike accident and should I win, the money will go towards her medical costs. The prize money won’t cover all of it, but if I’m able to give a mere fraction, it will fill my heart with joy. She is learning to walk again, but her road to recovery is still very long.

15. Danielle Reinecke (24), Somatologist, Rustenburg

I wanted to challenge myself. I think people underestimate me. I wanted to show that you can work hard and still look fabulous while doing it.

16. Monique Hobkirk (42), Somatologist, Nelspruit

For me, it seemed like an adventure and completely out of my comfort zone. When I heard my entry was successful, it became my aim to see if I could win the million rand.
