The brand-new season of MasterChef South Africa premieres on e.tv
In the lead-up to the much-awaited MasterChef South Africa Season 6, e.tv will whet appetites for all the cooking action, drama and delicious or sometimes disastrous dishes by airing the previous edition of Celebrity MasterChef.
MasterChef South Africa Season 6 will keep the free-to-air channel’s viewers on the knife’s edge from Sunday, 22 February at 18:00, with rebroadcasts on eReality and eExtra. Meanwhile, the Celebrity MasterChef rerun will begin on Sunday, 11 January, in the same timeslot.
Although both shows are local versions of the world’s best cooking reality show and the contestants have to impress the show’s esteemed judges — Chef Zola Nene, Justine Drake and Chef Katlego Mlambo — the MasterChef South Africa and Celebrity MasterChef formats do not mirror each other exactly.
MasterChef South Africa Season 6 spans 26 episodes, while the celebrity-driven spin-off comprises only six episodes.
Furthermore, MasterChef South Africa showcases the culinary talent of diverse home cooks from across the country, who are eliminated one by one throughout the season until the winner is determined. By contrast, Celebrity MasterChef features household names, who cook off three at a time in four “Heat” episodes. The winner of each “Heat” then proceeds to the semi-final, followed by a super tense head-to-head final.
Celebrity MasterChef episodic breakdown:
Heat 1 — Sunday, 11 January
The first three celebs showing off their skills in the MasterChef Kitchen are singer-songwriter and The Masked Singer SA Season 1 winner Holly Rey, soccer legend Yeye Letsoloyane and television presenter and businesswoman Prim Reddy.
Heat 2 — Sunday, 17 January
Miss SA runner-up Ayanda G. Thabethe, Afrikaans actor Armand Aucamp, and style icon Seth Shezi have to create scrumptious dishes, hoping to make it to the semi-final.
Heat 3 — Sunday, 25 January
The third group of celebrity cooks competing in the MasterChef kitchen to secure a place in the semi-final are television presenter Graeme Richards, actor Bohang Moeko, and fashion designer Mzukisi Mbane.
Heat 4 — Sunday, 1 February
After the previous three celebrity cook-offs, only one spot remains in the semi-final. The last three stars to turn up the heat in the kitchen are Afrikaans rocker Danie du Toit, radio and TV star Dineo Ranaka, and cookbook author and food influencer Sinoyolo Sifo.
Semi-final — Sunday, 8 February
They survived the “Heats”; now the Top 4 celebs face off in the MasterChef Kitchen in the nail-biting semi-final. During a tough pressure test, they must recreate a meal designed by the three judges, but then a culinary twist ups the ante and their chance of reaching the final.
Final — Sunday, 15 February
The two finalists whip up stylish three-course meals to win the coveted title of South Africa’s Celebrity MasterChef and the prize money of R1 million. Half of the winnings will be donated to a charity of their choice.
