Mandi du Plooy-Baard returns to Diepe Waters

Mandi du Plooy-Baard previously appeared in Diepe Waters as Theresa. Years ago, she and Jacques (Werner Coetser) had a brief relationship, and she became pregnant. Jacques’ father, Gys, was furious, and they had to hide the pregnancy. It was eventually revealed that Johan, whom Sanet and Rossouw raised as their own child, was the baby they hid away.

And now, Theresa is back from Monday 10 June.

Mandi tells us more.

Viewers have already gotten to know Theresa, but what can we expect this time?
Viewers will meet a new Theresa. Or rather, the real Theresa. That doesn’t mean it will all be plain sailing, but her heart is lighter. She is determined to rediscover herself and reclaim her life.

What do you enjoy about the role?
I love the depth of the character. The pain in her darkest times, her fears, but also her genuine humanity. It’s a character that offers the opportunity to tackle wonderful storylines and tell important stories that need to be heard.

Do you believe secrets always have a way of coming out?
That’s a tough one to answer, but I think so, yes. Because I can’t imagine how people can walk around burdened with pent-up secrets forever. And I don’t know how people can remember the details of all the lies they told.

What is the mysterious or unresolved case you are most curious about?
Madeleine McCann, the girl who disappeared in Britain, and Inge Lotz’s murder case. These cases still haunt me after all these years. I can’t imagine how it must be for their poor parents who still can’t find closure.

What else are you busy with for the rest of the year?
I regularly do voice-over work and motivational talks, and I’m currently working on Leon van Nierop’s latest radio drama series. Radio theatre is a highlight for me and something I could do every day. And then I’m a mom, and that keeps me very busy!

What actors would you like to work with?
I’ve had the privilege of acting with and learning from incredible South African actors. It’s always a pleasure to work with someone new, whether they are new talent or older, experienced actors. But I think I lean towards a Hollywood actor or two. Sandra Bullock – I love her as an actress – and Gerard Butler, for reasons I certainly don’t need to elaborate on.

June 16th is Father’s Day. What is the most valuable lesson you learned from your father?
I have the best dad in the world – apart from my children, who also have a fantastic father. I don’t know anyone else who can always maintain such a positive outlook. You always feel better by the time my dad leaves. And even when he faces obstacles, he still has the ability to see the positive in the situation.
