Rian van Heerden returns for a fifth season of Laataand by Rian

The fifth season of Laataand by Rian kicks off on Tuesday 7 April at 21:00, and with Rian van Heerden, viewers will once again discover a different side of a great variety of well-known personalities.

Rian says:

“We’re casting the net wide this season. From Rensche Bougas, Anthonie’s mother, to Rachel Kolisi, the ex-wife of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi. Then there’s our own Michelin-starred chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, Ruben Lambrechts from Namibia and politician and poet Mathews Phosa.”

What makes an ideal guest?

“A good guest has experienced the different seasons of life. They stand out in their specific field because they’ve made the news – for good or bad reasons.”

He says he does not try to provoke guests into being controversial or overly emotional.

“A guest has to decide where he or she wants to take the conversation. The role of the interviewer is simply to guide them, with dignity, towards other topics they can discuss within the available time. The purpose of our second guest is specifically to take the conversation to the next level, or to add a new dynamic. It’s also always a surprise for the main guest who this person will be.”

Other guests viewers can look forward to include singer Rudi Claase, Tony Leon, who served as leader of the DA from 2000 to 2007, and legendary comedian Barry Hilton.

If he could have any three guests on Laataand by Rian, who would they be?

“That’s always a difficult question, but at the moment, it would be former president Jacob Zuma, Donald Trump and King Charles.”

Laataand by Rian is on kykNET (DStv channel 144) on Tuesday nights at 21:00 from 7 April 2026. The episodes are also available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.
