Die Nuusmakers – Life on the barricades of breaking news

Adri Joubert has been the cool, calm and collected face and voice of the evening news for two decades. But then something happens with her husband, and her life turns into the news while a national crisis shakes the nation, forcing her to put her personal crisis on hold to guide the country’s viewers through the emergency from behind a very hot news desk.

kykNET’s new drama series, Die Nuusmakers, starring Rolanda Marais (as seasoned anchor Joubert), Brendon Daniels, Roeline Daneel, Lea Viviers, Arno Greeff, Lesley Maasdorp, Hannah Borthwick, Chris van Rensburg, Chris van Niekerk, Heinrich Wentzel, Susanne Beyers, Dorette Potgieter and Melissa de Vries, delves into the personal costs of delivering the news to the nation, from Tuesday 27 May at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv Channel 144).

It takes a team of talented, relentless people to gather and deliver breaking news to viewers each night. Die Nuusmakers explores both the art of news journalism and the personal struggles, ambitions, victories and challenges that those behind the scenes face in the pursuit of truth, while juggling the realities of their own complex daily lives. The story is set in Johannesburg.

Waldimar Pelser, M-Net Director of Premium Channels, says:

“Where a show like Niggies documented a terrible tragedy with the benefit of time and distance, Die nuusmakers offers a glimpse into the tremendous speed at which breaking news is produced – and the toll it takes on those who are at the forefront of every joy, frustration and sorrow the nation experiences, while processing events themselves.”

Die Nuusmakers is produced by Both Worlds (the team behind M-Net’s Recipes for Love & Murder), led by Karen Jeynes and Thierry Cassuto, joined by Annemarie Du Plessis (Koek). Jeynes also writes and directs and is joined behind the camera by Marvin Lee Beukes, Jozua Malherbe, Ludwig Binge, Kabous Meiring and Hélène Truter contribute their writing skills to this powerful drama.

Karen Jeynes explains:

“In an era of fake news and deepfakes, Die nuusmakers asks who we trust – and why. Adri Joubert represents a generation of news anchors who became like family members in South African homes, and her journey reflects our collective struggle to adapt to changing realities.”

Cassuto says:

“The newsroom is the perfect setting for a drama – high stakes, tight deadlines and colourful personalities all working toward the same goal, but often with conflicting methods. Add in Adri’s personal tragedy, and we have a powder keg of emotional storytelling.”

The rest of the cast includes Neels van Jaarsveld, Laudo Liebenberg, Loren Loubser, Nahum Hughes, Martelize Kolver, Ira Blackenberg and Kristen Raath.

Don’t miss Die Nuusmakers starting Tuesday 27 May at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv Channel 144) and is available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.
