Keenan Arrison joins Skemergrond as PJ Louw – a new Louw with old baggage
The world of Skemergrond is further complicated with the introduction of a new, layered character. Keenan Arrison makes his debut on 25 February as PJ Louw – the brother of JP Louw and a man with more than one secret still waiting to unfold.
Keenan Arrison is already a familiar face on South African screens and drew particular attention for his leading role in The Heart Is a Muscle, which was South Africa’s entry for the 2026 Oscars. His performance also earned him a nomination for a Silwerskerm Award, and he won a NFTA (National Film and Television Award) for Best Actor in a Feature Film. He also starred in popular series such as Mince Jou Hare, Binnelanders, Sara Se Geheim and Trackers.
With PJ Louw’s arrival, the dynamics of the Louw family suddenly become more complex. His presence not only raises new questions but also causes old tensions to resurface. In a world where loyalty and blood ties carry great weight, PJ’s connection to his family has the potential to test established relationships and shift power balances.
For Keenan, landing the role and becoming part of the Louw family was not only exciting, but also deeply meaningful.
“It was incredibly exciting for me and a great privilege. The Louw family is already so well established in the world of Skemergrond, with a strong history. When I heard I would be joining as PJ, I immediately realised that it comes with responsibility, but also with an incredible opportunity to bring something new to that family energy.”
PJ’s first appearance in Gemoedsdrif is anything but inconspicuous. Although he may look composed and humorous, there is clearly far more beneath his carefully constructed façade.
“PJ is a man with many layers. He is complex. On the surface he can appear calm and even funny, but there is a lot going on beneath that surface. Viewers who meet him for the first time will probably feel that there’s something he’s holding back – and that’s exactly where his complexity lies.”
His arrival brings a tangible tension with it:
“When PJ arrives in Gemoedsdrif, he brings a tense, almost electric energy with him. His presence alone begins to shift relationships and situations,” says Keenan.
Central to PJ’s story is his relationship with his brother, JP Louw – a bond marked by both loyalty and conflict.
“There is brotherly love, but also unspoken tension and possibly old wounds that haven’t fully healed yet. It’s a relationship that drives much of his inner conflict.”
Keenan’s approach to the role is deliberately introspective and finely attuned to what is not always said out loud.
“I build an inner biography that may not be entirely visible on screen, but that helps me make every choice honestly – to make the silence between the words just as meaningful as the dialogue itself.”
It is this moral complexity that drew him to the role:
“PJ is not simply a ‘hero’ or a ‘villain’; he is human, with flaws and motives that sometimes clash,” Keenan explains.
What viewers can expect is a character whose path will be anything but simple.
“PJ’s journey won’t be static. There are decisions he makes that can have far-reaching consequences – for himself and for the Louw family.”
And for viewers who think they’ve figured him out quickly?
“They may initially experience him as cold or calculating, but as the story unfolds it will become clear that there is emotional depth and even a sense of desperation beneath that controlled exterior.”
Ultimately, Keenan hopes that PJ’s story will encourage viewers to think twice before they judge:
“I hope viewers feel challenged not to judge too quickly. And that they start asking: ‘What really drives this man?’ ”
With PJ Louw’s arrival, one thing is clear: the Louw family’s past is still shrouded in mystery – and Gemoedsdrif stands on the threshold of new drama, uncertainty and revelations.
