George Bizos: A Life of Service
George Bizos was a kind and gentle giant, who was a passionate human rights advocate and a difficult opponent in the courtroom. A close friend and legal representative for Nelson Mandela, he wasn’t afraid to fight for justice and fairness as he used his legal prowess to take on the apartheid regime. But it was perhaps in his work as Senior Counsel for the Legal Resources Centre where he became a tireless champion for those who couldn’t afford to fight for themselves. Described as “one of the most formidable defenders of freedom, justice and equality” Uncle Bizos leaves a lasting legacy that will long be remembered far beyond the hallowed halls of South Africa’s legal fraternity. Fuelling the Illicit Market
South Africa’s petroleum industry is big business, with petrol and diesel being the major liquid fuels that are used in the country. To sell fuel to end-users, retailers such as service stations need to be registered and licenced with the appropriate institutions. It’s a cut-throat industry and the initial entry costs just to do business can be extremely high. Now illegal operators have entered the market to sell fuel cheaply and undercut legitimate traders. Carte Blanche goes undercover to expose some of these illicit dealers.

The Ignored War: Islamic State in Southern Africa?
A dark shadow has stealthily crept over the dream-holiday destination of Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique over the last three years. An estimated 1,500 people have been killed and 200,000 displaced in skirmishes between security forces, civilians and the Islamist militant group Ansar al-Sunna. Carte Blanche investigates whether the insurgency marks the Islamic State gaining a foothold in Southern Africa, or whether it’s just local discontent exploited for extremist propaganda.

Thuma Mina – The Remake
Hugh Masekela’s Thuma Mina, a song which evokes the lyrics of a hugely popular South African gospel chorus, was written by Masekela, Sello Twala and Peter Mokoena and became one of Bra Hugh’s most memorable hits. It’s a song highlighting themes of self-sacrifice and individual responsibility and perhaps there’s no better time than now to re-ignite South Africans to contribute to rebuilding the country. Now, some celebrated producers, musical directors and musicians – including Abigail Kubeka, Vusi Mahlasela, Thandiswa Mazwai, Zolani Mahola and J’Something – have put their voices together in a masterful remake of Thuma Mina to urge everyone to answer the call.
