South Africa’s Charming Penguins Take Centre Stage in Discovery Channel Series
This July, Discovery Channel is putting a spotlight on one of South Africa’s most beloved native species in Meet the Penguins. The heartwarming 8-episode series, premiering Saturday, 4 July at 21:55 on DStv Channel 121, follows the incredible work of the SANCCOB Facility in Cape Town, where a passionate team is battling to save the endangered African penguin.
Native to South Africa, the charming and loyal African penguin is now Critically Endangered, having been uplisted on 24 October 2024 after wild numbers fell below 10,000 breeding pairs. Today, only about 8,300 breeding pairs remain, and scientists warn the species could be functionally extinct in the wild by 2035 if urgent action isn’t taken. Meet the Penguins offers an exclusive look inside Cape Town’s SANCCOB, a world‑class facility that rescues, rehabilitates, and releases around 2,000 penguins each year. Viewers will get to know the colourful cast of human heroes and the feathered friends they care for.
The series documents the emotional life stories of the penguins who call SANCCOB home. From rearing abandoned chicks and supervising swimming lessons to washing oil off feathers and stitching up shark bites, the dedicated team gives these vulnerable birds a second chance at a life in the wild. The show exposes the fascinating inner workings of penguin biology while showcasing the profound bond between the animals and their human caretakers.
By showcasing SANCCOB’s frontline efforts, Meet the Penguins highlights South Africa’s vital role in global wildlife conservation. The series is a powerful reminder of the threats facing our natural world and a tribute to the local heroes working tirelessly to protect an iconic species, making for essential and inspiring viewing for the whole family.
The heartwarming 8-episode series Meet the Penguins, filmed at Cape Town’s SANCCOB Facility premieres on Saturday, 4 July at 21:55 on Discovery Channel (DStv Channel 121).
