MultiChoice’s M-Net partners with Cinemax and ZDF for the biggest original drama co-production in African television history – The six-part adaptation of Deon Meyer’s Trackers

The television adaptation of internationally acclaimed author Deon Meyer’s crime novel Trackers marks the beginning of a new era in high-end African storytelling. Pan-African television network M-Net and two global broadcasting giants are joining forces to take this uniquely South African political thriller to the world.  First, as announced in December 2018, M-Net sealed a groundbreaking collaboration deal with Germany’s public broadcaster ZDF. Now, M-Net can confirm that Trackers is also being co-produced by Cinemax, which will also distribute the drama series worldwide beyond M-Net and ZDF’s geographical broadcasting footprint.

While M-Net is already the home of Cinemax and its sister network HBO, allowing viewers to enjoy showstoppers like Game of Thrones, Big Little Lies, Westworld and many more, HBO, Cinemax and M-Net also launched an innovative Producers Apprenticeship programme last year when the Cinemax series Warrior, coming to M-Net in July, was filmed in South Africa. Some other Cinemax originals screened on M-Net include Banshee, The Knick and Strike Back.

Filming for Trackers has already started in exotic locations spanning the length and breadth of South Africa and the co-production partners have been working together on all aspects of production – from developing and casting, to assembling the crew and approving the final content.

Master wordsmith Deon Meyer, whose multiple-award-winning crime novels have been translated into more than 20 languages, with millions of copies sold worldwide, serves as a supervising screenwriter and co-producer; British writer Robert Thorogood (Death in Paradise) is the showrunner. The team of South African writers on the project includes the accomplished Mitchell’s Plain playwright, screenwriter and director Amy Jephta (Die Ellen Pakkies Story) as well as local writer/directors Kelsey Egen and Jozua Malherbe.

A talented local and international cast is on the bill for the six-part miniseries, some of which include Ed Stoppard, Rolanda Marais, James Alexander and Thapelo Mokoena.

  • Trix Vivier plays Cornel “Flea” van Jaarsveld, a seemingly innocent rhino vet and transporter who pulls the wool over many eyes.
  • Sandi Schultz is Janina Mentz, the head of the PBI who will be fighting for her agency’s survival when she discovers that a local terrorist group may be planning a major attack from South Africa with one of the world’s most wanted terrorists. If she can thwart their plot in a spectacular fashion, it’s possible that she can save the PBI, but if she fails the consequences could be catastrophic.
  • Sisanda Henna is Julius “Inkunzi/The Bull” Shabangu, a ruthless mercenary smuggler and gangster who is in cahoots with the terrorist organision to support his extravagant lifestyle.
  • James Gracie is Lemmer, formerly known to African audiences as James Alexander from the M-Net soap The Wild, has returned from Los Angeles where he is now building an international acting career, to play the iconic and tough-as-nails character Lemmer. After his career was destroyed in an earlier Presidential Bureau of Intelligence operation (PBI), Lemmer has relocated to the small town of Loxton in the Karoo. But then he is lured into a secret operation that involves rhinos, black diamonds, and a mysterious vixen.
  • British actor Ed Stoppard (The Pianist, Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag) is Lucas Becker, an international man of mystery who enters the PBI’s radar when Milla finds a major lead in her research. He seems to be looking for a stash of cash after being hijacked, but is this international man of mystery perhaps in the country for a completely different reason?
  • Rolanda Marais is Milla Strachan, a fragile Cape Town housewife who finally gathers the courage to walk out of her emotionally abusive home. She finds herself a new apartment and a new job as a low-level data analyst for the Presidential Bureau of Intelligence (the PBI). Little does she know that her new life will put her at the centre of an explosive conspiracy.
  • Thapelo Mokoena is Quinn Makebe, Janina’s headstrong but also highly ambitious sidekick. The fearless intelligence agent will pull out all the stops to save the agency and prevent the largest terrorist event in South African history.

Trackers will make its debut on M-Net 101 0n 27 October 2019 and will also be available on MultiChoice’s popular on-demand service, Showmax. The six-part drama series is produced by UK production company Three River Studios as well as South Africa’s Scene 23.
