Rising SA Singer David Derman Shines With New Single ‘Morning Light’ — A Hopeful Ode To Future Connections
After making waves with his debut single Old Friend, South African indie folk-pop artist David Derman returns with Morning Light — a heartfelt and intimate track inspired by the idea of becoming a parent one day. The single follows his debut single, Old Friend, which surpassed 100,000 streams and held strong positions on major South African radio charts.
Written soon after he became an uncle, the song reflects on the quiet hope and lasting love shared between parent and child — even if, for David, it’s still a bond he’s only begun to imagine.
“Becoming an uncle changed how I see love and legacy,” says David. “Even though I’m still young and single, I started thinking about what it might feel like to have a child of my own someday. This song is my way of exploring that feeling — the promise to love someone even before they exist.”
Produced by Aidin Nortje and Devon Murray (the duo behind ‘We Could Be Related’), the single blends stripped-back storytelling with textured folk-pop instrumentation. It’s gentle yet powerful — a metaphor for warmth, safety, and an unspoken bond that outlasts distance and time.
“Morning Light is about that emotional promise,” David adds. “Even when a child grows up and moves on, the love remains. It’s always there, like the morning light.”
David was also recently featured on Spotify’s Indie Go playlist and performed to crowds at Mojo Market and Up The Creek Festival 2025. With his debut EP set for release by the end of the year, David is continuing to experiment with different genres and moods.
“Regardless of that, at its core, it stays true to my style of honest, heartfelt songwriting. I can’t wait to share it with the world.”
