David Derman releases cinematic new single “Stardust” – a euphoric anthem of love at the end of the world

Cape Town-based singer-songwriter David Derman unveils his powerful new single, Stardust, out today across all digital streaming platforms. Blending cinematic pop and folk influences with anthemic energy, Stardust transforms an apocalyptic concept into a soaring celebration of love, connection, and transcendence.

Written alongside producer Aidin Nortje, Stardust imagines a world on the brink of collapse, where material things fade into insignificance and only human connection remains. With a sound reminiscent of the grand, uplifting moments found in The Greatest Showman, the track balances emotional depth with a vibrant, dance-driven pulse.

Derman says:

“I wrote ‘Stardust’ as an upbeat, passionate and cinematic pop/folk song that imagines the moment the world might be ending, and what truly matters when everything material falls away. It’s about where you would go, and who you would run to, if everything else disappeared.”

Rooted in themes of time, alternate dimensions, and transcendental love, the song explores a bond that defies not only distance, but existence itself. Against a backdrop of chaos – shaking ground, shifting skies, and distant sirens – the emotional core of Stardust remains steadfast: the urgency of reaching the one person who matters most.

Its expansive chorus captures this sentiment in a powerful promise: “I’ll break through walls of whatever world you’re calling from, it’s rainfall, stardust, in the moment I’m holding you.” Even in the face of total collapse, the song insists that love endures, adapts, and ultimately finds a way.

David Derman’s musical journey began at just six years old, inspired by watching his mother play Spanish guitar. With a rich family lineage in music, including a great-grandfather who was a renowned conductor and multi-instrumentalist, his artistic path was almost inevitable. His formative years at Rondebosch Boys’ High helped shape his performance abilities and refine his creative voice.

David Derman first captured widespread attention with his breakout single “Old Friend,” which soared to No. 1 on the Algoa FM Top 30 and also the 5FM SA Indie Chart for two consecutive weeks, while also reaching the Top 10 on both the KFM and 947 Top 40 charts. Finding grounding in storytelling, the track struck a chord with listeners, earning him both critical recognition and a growing national audience. This early success not only marked a defining moment in Derman’s career but firmly positioned him as one of South Africa’s most compelling emerging artists.

Drawing influence from artists such as Ed Sheeran, Kaleo, Noah Kahan, and Ziggy Alberts, Derman crafts music that prioritises storytelling above all else. His work traverses themes of love, healing, and introspection, resisting strict genre boundaries in favour of emotional authenticity.

Beyond music, Derman’s academic journey is equally remarkable – having completed degrees in molecular biology, psychology, and a Master’s in Wine Biotechnology. Now, he turns his full focus to releasing the body of work he developed during his university years, stepping boldly into his artistic calling.

With Stardust, David Derman offers listeners a moment of escape, reflection, and hope – reminding us that even at the end of everything, love remains the most powerful force of all.
