Duma Collective Brings Urban Dance to the Forefront with Dance Nation Africa

Duma Collective, the trailblazing creative communications agency, is excited to announce the launch of Dance Nation Africa – a two-day urban dance camp aimed at celebrating the intricacies of urban dance styles while providing a platform to inspire the next generation of dancers.

Taking place over 05 and 06 April 2025 at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria, Dance Nation Africa will unite dance enthusiasts between the ages of 12 and 30 through an engaging experience featuring dance styles such as Hip Hop, Amapiano, and House.

Dance Nation Africa is proudly conceptualised and owned by Duma Collective. The event will be brought to life in collaboration with Maybelline South Africa, Stir Collective, the official technical partner, and the South African Body of Dance (SABOD), the official dance association partner.

Eunice Marais, Vice President of SABOD, expressed her support, stating,

“Dance Nation Africa is a dynamic platform that uplifts South African artists and choreographers, and SABOD is proud to stand behind this initiative. This visionary movement promises to inspire the next generation of dancers while fostering unity, collaboration, and community through a shared passion for dance.”

This year, the inaugural event will be anchored by South African dance sensation Kamo Mphela, who shared,

“Dancing is how I got into the entertainment industry. That video of me dancing inside a store went viral in 2019 and changed my life. That’s the power of dance. I’m so excited to be part of Dance Nation Africa and I’m really grateful to my family at Maybelline for making it happen. We’re looking forward to bringing together dancers from all walks of life to learn from each other and showcase their talents to each other and the world.”

The renowned Urban Dance Camp in Europe is the inspiration behind Dance Nation Africa. The event will feature workshops, masterclasses, dance battles, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, all designed to build a community united by a shared passion for dance. Featuring an exciting showcase of top-tier dance talent from across the country, Dance Nation Africa has also secured a special guest flying in straight from the UK.

South Africa’s own Johannes Radebe, a Strictly Come Dancing UK star since 2018, is making a homecoming like no other. From winning the SA Latin Championships twice to dazzling global audiences, he’s proof that dance can take you anywhere. On Sunday, 6 April 2024, he joins Dance Nation Africa to inspire the next generation — showing them that dance can open doors to the world, new experiences, and limitless possibilities.

Another familiar face joining the Dance Nation Africa crew is Robot Boii, named Best Dancer in Africa by Trace Africa in 2023. He will take on the role of dance battle MC for the weekend.

Leading the inaugural dance camp are choreographers such as:

Saturday:

  • Kamo Mphela

Sibu ‘The Fixer’ Mabena, the founder of Duma Collective, comes from an impressive background in the South African dance scene. Before starting Duma Collective, Sibu was involved in some of SA’s biggest dance events like Masters of Rhythm and Strictly Hip Hop.

Expressing her passion for dance, and her vision for the event, Sibu said,

“I come from a dance background where I was a dancer, and later a choreographer and trainer, for the South African Hip Hop Dance Team between 2004 and 2012. I am a product of the discipline and teamwork that you learn in dancing, and it really excites me to have the opportunity to produce an event that dancers can look forward to. They’ll be making new friends, learning other dance styles from some of the best choreographers in the industry, and expressing themselves among like-minded individuals.”

With a star-studded lineup of some of the biggest names in choreography, this urban dance camp is set to offer attendees the chance to learn, connect, and showcase their talent in a new, transformative environment. Tickets will be available on Quicket starting today, 30 January 2025.
