Human Rights is (C)urrently Gold in South African Theatre.

Currently (G)old scooped two awards at the National Arts Festival – a Bronze Ovation and Best Ensemble – and has also been presented at the Wits 969 Festival, PopART Theatre and the Ramolao Makhene Theatre. Currently (G)old’s success is testament to the work of a dedicated team devoted to the development of cutting-edge theatre that provokes public dialogue.

South Africa is lauded for having the most progressive constitution in the world. In Currently (G)old, the cast investigates how the human rights enshrined in the constitution are experienced by ordinary South Africans, by presenting a montage of moments from our past and present.

Referencing the Sharpeville massacre, 1976 Uprising, the Fees Must Fall movement, and other seminal turning points, the play uses satire to interrogate and sometimes ridicule the relevance of human rights in real life.

The production is presented by the Kwasha Theatre Company, a collaborative project between the Market Theatre Laboratory and the Windybrow Arts Centre. This powerful ensemble cast uses comedy, music and movement to ask the most important question of all: do our human rights only exist on paper?

The Kwasha Theatre Company helps emerging actors and theatre-makers find their feet and their voices in a uniquely challenging industry, by giving them a chance to work together for a year in the creation and presentation of new and innovative theatre.

After its successful run at the National Arts Festival, the Wits 969 Festival, the PopART Theatre and the Ramolao Makhene Theatre audiences will have another opportunity to experience this engaging work at the Market Theatre’s Barney Simon from the 13 to the 18 August.
