C O V I D – 1 9 > THE IMPACT

Claire Mawisa: “My son is currently in grade 9, and I am grateful that I have the means to send him to a well-resourced school. Yet, even in this wonderful school, where one could easily assume that most learners come from middle class families, 60% of the learners do not have internet access at home, nor devices to access that internet. COVID-19 has stopped education in its tracks for most children in this country. I can’t even imagine what it must be like for those who are less fortunate. How do we make sure that no learner is left behind during this pandemic?”

COVID-19: Education

As schools enter a second month of lockdown, parents and teachers are stretched to the limit to keep up with schooling at home. But while some learners can continue online, many have to cope with the challenge of sporadic communication with their teachers and a lack of connectivity and resources. Can learners complete the school year or is it, as some have said, a lost cause?
