The Kliphuis Mystery

A holiday house in the Eastern Cape has become the site of an intractable mystery after a young couple was found dead in the bathroom. Without any obvious cause of death or injuries, even the post-mortems couldn’t give their families closure. With delays at forensic laboratories, answers can take years – but after the incident hit the media, several more people came forward reporting blackouts in the same room. Carte Blanche investigates whether carbon monoxide poisoning could be the cause of such grief.

Ditched at the Altar

They’d waited patiently for their dream day – deposits paid upfront, invitations sent out, suits pressed and the wedding dress fits to perfection. Counting the Costs

With an over-indebted bank balance and a reduced income from its tax base, South Africa’s fiscus has been constrained for many years. Then COVID-19 hit, forcing a national lockdown that has put an end to many businesses that were already taking strain in the country’s low-growth economy. Now with a R500-billion relief package to assist organisations and individuals worst affected by the global pandemic, is it the right strategy to keep the country’s finances afloat? Carte Blanche counts the costs.

Claire Mawisa: “The barbed-wire lockdown sites in Durban may look extreme, but the compassionate care happening on the inside is transformative and gives drug-dependant homeless people a much-needed second chance at life.”

COVID-19 Lockdown: Unforeseen Consequences

With a burgeoning homeless population in winter when Durban’s milder coastal climate attracts street people and roaming drug addicts from around the country, the City of eThekwini could take no chances with COVID-19. With the help of NGOs and volunteers, a handful of public spaces have been fenced with barbed wire as secure, monitored camps. Over 2000 residents are given three square meals and medical care. Once inside, no-one can leave, and infection screening and sanitisation are mandatory. The only trade-off? Drugs must go. For some homeless people it’s been their first opportunity to get the support they needed to heal from addiction.
