The Isle of Man: it’s home to one of the world’s most rapidly growing populations of South African expatriates. Fear of crime and economic collapse may drive many to its rocky shores, but its growing Saffer community is just as motivated by the opportunity for “tax efficient” living. The island is a scenic outpost with zero capital gains tax, no inheritance tax, and low corporate rates. As confidence in South Africa’s economy continues to crumble and emigration erodes the tiny tax-paying public, what are the consequences for inequality, service delivery and social stability back home?
