Gautrain 2.0
It was hailed as the answer to Gauteng’s traffic problems, but the Gautrain has failed to reach projected ridership or reduce congestion. Instead, while it offers a clean, safe world-class service, the Gautrain remains out of reach for commuters who depend on public transport. And it’s running at a massive loss. But that hasn’t stopped management and provincial government pushing a multibillion-rand extension of the service that residents fear will destroy homes and property prices. Will the proposed expansion transform the province’s transport? Or is it no more than an expensive showpiece?

Limpopo Deluge
Roads washed away, services cut off and families displaced: Limpopo’s torrential rainfall has been declared a national disaster. Hundreds huddle in churches, while the death toll ticks upwards and the estimated cost of the damages soars into the billions. Carte Blanche is on the ground as pilots fly rescue missions to isolated villages, and authorities scramble to offer support. From homeowners with tales of narrow escapes, to the heroes rebuilding bridges and delivering food packages, we capture the human, economic and environmental impact of extreme weather events wracking the province.

Lost Football Factory
It was once the home of legends, a grassroots foundation for passion and talent. Racially integrated in a time of deep division, the Arcadia Shepherds Football Club produced Bafana Bafana stars, and its stadium played host to Banyana Banyana. Today, it lies in ruins. Political pressure or internal mismanagement? What destroyed Arcadia Shepherds Football Club? What can its decline tell us about the state of soccer development in our country? And can small, hopeful efforts offer a future for our budding athletes?
