Lethal Targets
In July this year, Coreth Naudé – a well-known senior advocate working for SARS on several high-profile cases – was shot multiple times in Durban. Naudé was arriving at her hotel parking lot in Durban North when two gunmen opened fire, wounding her three times in the upper body, neck and face: all in broad daylight. Naudé survived, but she is still in a critical condition in hospital. This brazen assassination attempt is just one in a long line of hits on prominent investigators: detectives, liquidators, and even city officials. Powerful suspects are no longer simply silencing whistleblowers, but setting their sights on investigators as well and threatening the rule of law.

Aboriginal Nation
A self-styled indigenous empress poised to pay out billions of rands hidden in a secret trust to the descendants of the Khoi and San in South Africa: if only it were true. But it’s not, despite what the imperial leaders have told a vast network of WhatsApp groups where they groom poor people to pledge their scarce cash to the scheme. They say the ticket to great wealth is an Aboriginal ID, purchased online. This card will supposedly help beneficiaries cash in, and give them immunity to South African law. This scam is part of a larger movement to create a Khoisan leadership class worthy of state perks and influence. We penetrate the campaign of Empress Valerie Sabina Letsie III who revealed herself in front of Parliament this week, and identify two more groups that have taken cash from people desperate to get a cut of the multi-million rand payout that’s promised in the name of their Khoisan legacy.

Weight Loss Miracle?
It was intended for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes, but Ozempic has become the latest fad in the weight loss industry. The drug, which is a weekly injection that helps to lower blood sugar levels, has an unintended side effect: slowing digestion and encouraging people to eat less. Thousands of Ozempic users from around the world are calling it a weight loss miracle, having shed kilogrammes after just a few weeks on the drug. But as more people turn to Ozempic for weight loss, the drug is becoming harder to find, and diabetes patients are paying the price. Now some users are turning to the black market to purchase the drug.
