From heartache to hope: Amy Tjasink introduces new single Shadows of the Sun
South African singer-songwriter Amy Tjasink returns with her radiant new single, Shadows of the Sun, a deeply personal release shaped by her father’s life-changing stroke and the enduring bond they share. Shadows of the Sun is also the lead single from Amy Tjasink’s highly anticipated album Valley Girl due for release on 14 August.
Amy’s father, her lifelong supporter and musical inspiration, survived a stroke that permanently altered his life, leaving him mentally and physically disabled. In an instant, everything changed, but the connection between them, and the dreams they once shared, remained unshaken. That experience became the emotional foundation for Shadows of the Sun, a song rooted in love, resilience, and the quiet strength of carrying someone’s belief forward.
“My dad has always been my biggest supporter. Music was something we shared and it was both of our dreams. Even though so much has changed, that belief hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s still with me every single day.”
Rather than focusing on loss, the song leans into legacy and promise with a commitment Amy has made to continue pursuing music, carrying both her own dreams and her father’s forward. It speaks to the invisible threads that connect us to the people who shape us, even when circumstances shift beyond recognition.
“For me, ‘Shadows of the Sun’ means that even in the unknown and even in the places that feel a little scary, I’m never really alone. My dad would follow me anywhere, just to make sure I’m okay. That kind of love doesn’t disappear. It stays with you, it guides you, and it gives you the courage to keep going.”
The song’s imagery was later shaped by a vivid creative reference to The Lion King, in particular the moment where Mufasa teaches Simba about the balance between light and shadow. That scene became a powerful metaphor for guidance, growth, and finding your path, echoing Amy’s relationship with her father and the way his presence continues to guide her.
Written in December 2025 while surrounded by nature, the song came to Amy in a moment of quiet reflection with guitar in hand, immersed in the natural world, and channeling a story that had long been waiting to be told.
Sonically, the track is a vibrant fusion of African rhythms, indie folk textures, and uplifting pop melodies, creating a sound that feels both rooted and expansive – distinctly South African, yet universally resonant.
“I wanted this song to feel like a journey – something that moves, that lifts you, that makes you feel. I’m so proud of what it represents. It’s about hope, it’s about growth, and it’s about choosing to keep going, no matter what.”
Following the success of her breakout hit Feels Like Mzansi – which climbed to #1 on Good Hope FM, saw her take the stage at the SAFTAs, and resonated nationwide – Shadows of the Sun marks a powerful next chapter. Where her previous release celebrated identity and home, this new single steps into something more intimate, while still holding onto a strong sense of hope, purpose, and light.
With Shadows of the Sun, Amy Tjasink continues to establish herself as a compelling voice in South Africa’s music scene and one that blends storytelling with emotional honesty, always reaching toward the light.
