The 2024 Provincial and National Elections on 29 May mark an important milestone as we celebrate South Africa’s 30th year of democracy. Understanding the power of your vote and how it can affect the direction the country takes over the next five years is crucial to making the best decision for yourself, your family and your country – and DStv and our channel partners will be delivering unrivalled coverage from the most trusted names in journalism in the lead up to and aftermath of the country’s 6th democratic election.
Newzroom Afrika’s Road to Vote ’24 (DStv Channel 405), on Sundays from 5pm-6pm is anchored by the channel’s Contributing Politics Editor Vuyo Mvoko and will unpack multiple elements of the electoral process and offer deep political insights. The channel will also be running ‘Voter Education Minutes’ sprinkled throughout its programming that will explore an array of topics, including ‘What are independent candidates?’; ‘What are coalition governments?’; ‘National Assembly vs Provincial Legislature’; Types of Elections’; ‘Who makes up the national government?’; ‘Who makes up the provincial government?’ and ‘What electoral system is used in the national and provincial elections?’
Izindaba Zethu on Mzansi Wethu (DStv Channel 163) will run an extended 60-minute broadcast on 29 May from 19:00, anchored by co-hosts Vusizwe Langa and Thabile Mbhele. The special broadcast will include a host of election-related features and in-studio interviews with political analysts to review the progress of the election and the start of the vote count.
kykNET’s In Gesprek: Verkiesings 2024 (DStv Channel 144) will keep its finger on the pulse of the election campaigns in various provinces, engage with voters on the ground, analyse matters with some of our country’s leading political experts and bring viewers up to date with the day’s biggest developments in a limited week-long special. Hosted by Lourensa Eckard on 28, 29, and 30 May at 21:00, the series will feature the wrap-up of the final election rallies; host in-studio experts to dissect incoming election news and have a dedicated team at the IEC’s ROC to get the latest news from the organisation on the state of voting readiness.
On 29 May, field teams in KZN, Gauteng and the Western Cape will speak to voters in each province, with more in-studio analysts and breaking news from the ROC. On 30 May, studio guests will analyse the latest results and the in-the-field teams will provide news from the country’s largest provinces.
No election coverage would be complete without inserts from the Carte Blanche team on M-Net (DStv Channel 101). On 26 May, the last Sunday before the election, the show examines the new addition to the election landscape, independent candidates, and the role they can play in our democracy. On 2 June, in the aftermath of the national elections and days after the votes have been counted, Carte Blanche asks; did the electorate make the right decisions? With a strong panel of experts, they’ll ask this critical question as South Africa prepares for five years under the next administration.
