Claire: “Health professionals are collecting samples and facilitating COVID-19 tests and our labs are busy processing them as fast as they possibly can. The capacity to do the mass testing of the entire South African population may be there, but what happens if we can’t get the actual test kits into the country due to the high global demand?”
Ramping Up Testing for COVID-19
Well into South Africa’s stringent 21-day national lockdown and with government on high alert, the number of positive patients is still steadily rising and with a delay in obtaining results, it seems the country’s infection rate may be skewed. Now the national Health Department has set out an ambitious plan to screen and test thousands in every province. So could an intensified roll-out of screening and testing finally be the difference?

Against the Ropes: The Public Protector
In March, the Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane suffered yet another defeat when the high court set aside her report on the president’s CR 17 campaign funds. The damning judgment is one of several high-profile matters where the courts have either questioned her competence, her honesty or her understanding of the law. She says she is being unfairly targeted. But now a bigger battle looms for Mkhwebane, as parliament may soon begin proceedings that could remove her from office, and some of her most senior staff have spoken out about her leadership of this important institution.
