Idols Season 15 Kwazulu-Natal gets it turn to ‘Go For Gold’

The Durban Idols auditions could be summed up as a theatre of comebacks, chasing dreams and contagious laughs. The Idols judges Unathi, Somizi and Randall together with the guest judge, Vusi Nova, were in for a treat when Durbs delivered an avalanche of great talent.

It didn’t take long for eThekwini to show the world what is has in store for South Africa in Season 15. Melanin, 20, from Newcastle got to explain a few words from Somgaga’s dictionary, words such as noisication, zagazaga and jivontional. She didn’t even have to sing a second stanza for the judges to spot her effortless talent. She didn’t only get the meanings right, but she managed to get the first Golden ticket for the day which sent her straight to theatre week.

Then there was someone who can be labelled the queen of comebacks. Nqobile fainted on the Idols stage in Season 12. But yesterday she overcame her stage fright and nailed Rihanna’s Love On The Brain. Her name literally means winner, and she walked off the stage victorious. This is why the auditions could be labelled the theatre of comebacks. Unathi and Somizi thought she couldn’t sing when they met her three years ago. The 21 year old who literally fell on stage embodies the proverbial say, “When we fall, we must stand up and start again.” She won gold and now South Africa will be seeing her at theatre week.

Another contestant to remember is Harrison Mkhize, a 24-year-old teacher from KwaMashu who got a golden ticket and wants to chase his dreams. SA will have to wait and see if Mkhize will emulate Season 12 Idols winner Noma Khumalo and show Mzansi that KZN teachers are talented beyond the classrooms they teach. It is indeed about chasing dreams while living your other dream.

And there was Snenhlanhla aka Snezeiy, 24, from Umlazi who’s laugh is so contagious that she got everybody laughing uncontrollably. Her talent is also too much. She belted out Amanda Black’s Kahle with the most jovial face.

Angel honoured the guest judge, Vusi Nova, when she nailed his song, Ndikuthandile that left Somizi speechless and Unathi longing for more, while Nova was pleased that KwaZulu-Natal delivered a memorable rendition in his presence.

Just as the Durban auditions were about to wrap up, SA witnessed twin sisters Viggy and Virginia, 21-year-old sisters who went on stage to do a duet that convinced all the four judges that they should be given a chance to make their golden way to theatre week.

The auditions were a reminder that whatever people do, they must always chase their dreams, come back even after falling and have light moments of laughs too.

With just over 20 golden tickets, South Africa shall wait to see what the home of the previous two winners will bring this coming Sunday when the Cape Town City auditions are aired.
