It was a crime that devastated New Zealand and sent shockwaves around the world. In March this year, a gunman shot and killed 50 Muslim worshippers and injured 39 others inside a mosque during Friday prayers. The man charged with the killings, Brenton Tarrant – an Australian with links to far-right white supremacist groups – planned and executed the murders right under the radar of international anti-terrorism investigators. The attack was designed for the internet age, streamed live on social media and viewed by thousands of users before it was hastily taken down. Security forces around the world continue to focus on Islamic extremism but did the Christchurch massacre reveal how authorities have failed to grasp the threat of far-right supremacy?
