Op My Eish!: Ruan sidesteps his top three and dots down the ball behind his own goal line

The final episode of Op My Eish! delivered an ending no one saw coming and had the whole country talking. In a first for the series, Ruan Smith ultimately chose no one, leaving three women and viewers with raw emotions.

The episode kicked off with an intimate visit where Charlene, Cindy-Lee and Bejanke opened their hearts to Ruan and JP. The tension built further when their loved ones joined. Cindy-Lee invited her cousin Alta Argyle. Bejanke brought her friend Sanet Geere, and Charlene was supported by Chantelle de Villiers.

Ruan and JP’s best friend, Andries Coetzee, also joined, giving the women the opportunity to question him about Ruan while he shared honest advice. Ruan, in turn, spent time with the women’s loved ones, who got to know him better – and were largely impressed by him.

Later, a relaxed braai brought everyone together, where the women also met Ruan’s family for the first time, including his sisters and father. But amid the warm atmosphere, uncertainty began to creep in, especially for Cindy-Lee, who felt she hadn’t received enough attention from Ruan.

As the final day arrived, it became clear that Ruan was internally struggling with his decision. Before the big moment, the women got ready in beautiful designer gowns by Anel Botha.

Then followed three emotionally charged farewell conversations. Ruan told Cindy-Lee that the experience had been life-changing for him and that they were connected on another level, but that he would not be choosing her. She accepted his decision with sadness, but also grace.

With Bejanke, the moment became even more intense. He acknowledged his love for her, but said he could not make a decision and needed to work on himself first. She responded emotionally, but still wished him well.

With Charlene, he was just as honest. He said she ticked every box for him, but he has decided to ultimately choose no one. Through tears, Charlene admitted it hurt, but that she respected his honesty.

In the final scene, Ruan and the three women walked into a room filled with family and friends. The anticipation was palpable, and emotions ran high – even JP had to take a moment as the reality of the situation hit him.

“My final decision was not easy. I made the call at the last minute about what I wanted to do and what was best for me,” Ruan said. “I felt I made the right decision under very emotional circumstances.”

According to him, the limited time he had spent alone with each woman weighed heavily:

“I worked out how much time I had spent with each of the ladies one-on-one, and it had a big impact on my decision. I felt it would be dishonest to choose someone if I had feelings for two women. By the end, you should know who you’re going to choose, but I wasn’t convinced.”

Despite the heartbreak that followed, Ruan stood by his decision – one he believed was not only right for himself, but for the women too.

The experience forced him to look at himself in ways he hadn’t expected.

“I learned that I had many shortcomings in different aspects of a relationship. I had suppressed my feelings for many years, and emotions started coming out that I didn’t even know I had.”

He said the journey had changed his perspective on love.

“Relationships are daily work, and you have to make sacrifices. Just because something feels right in the moment doesn’t mean your lives will fit together.”

Moving forward, he wants to change his approach. He intends

“to truly invest in people and get to know them for who they are – not just what you see on the outside, but who they are on the inside.”

It was an ending that not only broke hearts, but also served as a reminder that honesty was sometimes the hardest – and bravest – choice.
