Once In A Lifetime Lots At The Cape Wine Auction Cape Wine Barrel Auction

The Cape Wine Barrel Auction – part of the highly-anticipated Cape Wine Auction – is the chance for oenophiles and serious wine collectors to own truly one-of-a-kind wines while giving something back to the wine community.

Once again this year some of the Cape’s top winemakers have made their most exclusive and vintage wines available in never-before-offered selections guaranteed to excite any wine aficionado.

The exclusive event takes place on Saturday, February 7 at 10h00 at the iconic Nederburg Wine Estate.

There are some truly exciting lots on offer including:

  • Nederburg, host of this year’s Cape Wine Auction, has been crafting wine for an uninterrupted 235 years. Private Bin Two Centuries, the winery’s highest tier, represents the pinnacle of its winemaking. The specialty, small-batch wine was matured in a selection of 100% new French oak barrels for 29 months before the final assemblage.
  • From Spier comes the Creative Block 5 2022, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Grapes from different vineyard blocks and varietals are carefully selected and combined to create wines that are greater than the sum of their parts. Since launching in 2009, the range has become Spier’s most awarded collection, with Creative Block 5 alone earning an unprecedented 65 awards.
  • Named the South African Wine Producer of the Year 2024 by the prestigious International Wine & Spirits Competition, Cederberg Wines proudly brings its acclaimed Cederberg Shiraz 2018 to the auction.

  • De Wetshof is known as South Africa’s pioneering House of Chardonnay, and the barrel offered at the Cape Wine Auction – the De Wetshof Chardonnay Block 17 2024 – represents a part of the country’s Chardonnay legacy, as well as it containing a superlative wine.
  • From Domaine Des Dieux comes the Rosé Cap Classique 2016, a classical blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, crowned by a soft mousse supporting gracefully evolved Pinot Noir fruit from extensive lees ageing.
  • The Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Chardonnay 2024 comes from vineyard sites in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. This wine epitomises the cool maritime climate into a classic expression of a naturally fermented and oak matured Chardonnay.
  • Glen Carlou Quartz Stone Chardonnay 2024 is sourced from selected Chardonnay vineyards rooted in quartz-rich, skeletal soils and reflects both site and season. Says cellarmaster Johnnie Calitz: “High aroma concentration shows citrus, white peach, subtle spice and toast. The palate is focused, with lime, lemon, green apple and stone fruit, supported by a fine mineral line from the quartz soils. The entry is fresh and the finish long, with an estimated ageing potential of 12 to 15 years.”
  • Emerging from the estate’s oldest Pinotage blocks, the exceptional Rijk’s Wine Estate Auction Reserve Pinotage 2019 wine is crafted solely from its finest barrel of the vintage. It received three punch-downs per day and was matured in a new 300 litre French oak barrel for 22 months.
  • Creation Emma’s Pinot Noir 2023 – Daddy’s Girl comes from Creation Wines on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge and is a site expressive wine made by cellarmaster JC Martin in collaboration with his daughter. It was named Word’s Best Vineyards Continent Winner (Africa) and third overall in the world in 2024.
  • Ashbourne is a small Pinotage specialist, founded in 1996 by Anthony Hamilton Russell and located on a beautiful 64 hectare property in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley on the eastern border of Hamilton Russell Vineyards. It has donated its Ashbourne Pinotage 2023 for the barrel auction.
  • The De Grendel Sir David Graaff 2017 First Baronet of Cape Town is a distinguished blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, matured in new French oak for 22 months. It is a collector’s wine of extraordinary grace and power, destined to evolve beautifully for decades to come.
  • The Blue Lady Cabernet Sauvignon holds a special place in Warwick Estate’s history as the very first wine made on the estate in 1984. Originally created by Norma Ratcliffe, one of South Africa’s pioneering female winemakers, this wine represents more than four decades of dedication to crafting exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Over the years, The Blue Lady has become an icon of Stellenbosch winemaking. On offer is the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Says Cape Wine Auction chairperson Paul Clüver:

“We are delighted with the wines on offer this year. Bidding is going to be a hotly contested affair as wine lovers challenge each other for a rare opportunity to own a masterpiece of South African winemaking. However, the biggest winners on the day will be the trusts that benefit from all the monies raised.”
